New Mastering Contest

I think whoever supplies the prize should be the one to pick the "winner". :D

Why does this have to be "either, or"? Why can't it be both a competition and sort of a mastering seminar? Really, what interests me is the process and the discussion. If a competition spurs that, then great, but let's keep in mind that reason we are all here is to learn and to share knowledge.

Hmm....

I don't want to see this idea get lost in committee. I also really don't care how it happens. I *think* that mastering is too subjective to judge like a contest, but I'm more interested in the discussion that follows than I am in deciding how the contest will be judged.

All I really need is a file to download. I don't much care what happens after that besides the excitement of seeing what other people do with it and getting to talk about it.

It won't be a particularly comprehensive exercise since mastering involves quite a bit more than tweaking one song, but I think its a good idea anyway. This place can really use this discussion and I think a lot of good will come of it.

Take care,
Chris

IT IS! This must be like the sixth time I've said that. The last PMC has almost 700 posts. If it were "just a contest", there would be about 50.

I don't feel like typing any more on this topic if those unfamiliar with the PMC refuse to check it out.

Chris, I'd appreciate having a listen to your track--can you PM me a link?

Wow.

I think you all are making this WAY more complicated than it need be. The PMC's have been incredibly successful - I see no harm in following that model.

99.9% of the people in the PMC's have been nothing but helpfull. I expect the same will happen here.

:D

I think it would be cool if some of the bigshot mastering engineers DID enter anonymously. If nothing else, their tracks may really show the contrast in the range of good vs bad. Plus, that would be like the ultimate ego boost to a lowly such as myself to actually beat out one of them! :D

We could do a battle royale between the Home Rec'ers and the Pros...

It'd be like the ultimate David versus Goliath...

Or David versus the entire U.S. Armed Military Forces...

Yep. And I think it would be very nice, and extremely helpful, if all the guys that have time, would chime in and make comments whenever possible. Tell us what they might do different, and why. And tell us what they like about things that were done. It could only help.

Not that I would consider myself a "bigshot" ME, but why are the folks who make a living out of mastering the "bad guys"? Especially when they take time out to help?

I wonder why I haven't seen Brad around lately ...

I sure hope no one that gets good, and free info from you guys would really think you are bad guys. I personally would love any help you, and the other skilled people could contribute here. I am sure you have othere things that consume time, so any help is appreciated, by many.

Where'd everybody go?????

Still here! We're in the final stages of planning. I'm waiting to hear a track, and then we'll be ready!

Il have to just send it without the backup vocals on it i guess.
Ill post a link for you tommorow.
Also...what would you guys rather have?

A. Rescue a decent rock mix, and turn it to gold?

or

B. Master a wonderfully recorded acoustic singer songwriter tune?

I mean obviously one is more challenging tomake sound good than the other.

So whatll it be?
"Challenge" or "Piece of Cake! you'd have to be deaf to screw this one up!"

Let me know.

Honestly, I think what might be best is to save the "Piece of Cake" for #2. Here's why: a screwed up tune will give everybody a chance to build some confidence making changes that are easy to identify. Then after everybody gets some experience, they might be better able to find nuances in a really good performance. Would that also give you time to finish the backing vocals?

What do you think?

I actually agree with not starting with a really good tune. I screwed the last one up in the PMC...... :(

I've asked before about the PMC, I have no idea where it is and I'd like to check out these tunes everyone is talking about. Could someone please post a link, or directions how to get there?

Thanks, I guess I missed post #89!

So the way this competition will work is, anybody can attempt to master the song that is chosen, but there will be a set panel of judges? I've been reading in and out of this thread, but some details still seem a little blurry.

Thats basicly it ina nutshell Al.
Any one can enter.

After a set date, all the entries are judges by who Mshil feels is qualified to do so.

At that point a winner or winners are selected.
There are no limits on how many entries you post (just make sure you say so when IT IS you FINAL entry)

The coolest thing about about doing it this way is there will be continual feedback from peers mastering th same tune, and hopefully some of the more exp. folk around here.

Now ideally it would be cool to have some of the said "exp. people" actually DO a master to give as an exapmle.

But really i feel like everyone is thinking the same thing in regurads to that...
What if some newbie aces a master (odds of this are low, but...) and everyone thinks THAT master is superior to the veterans master?
Well obviously thats not so great for the veteans rep.
So im positive we will not see the big boys "competeing", and thats really why IMO. Thats totally understandable.

However, that is why i proposed that they participate by way of crtique or judging, which would certainly up the learning potential of the contest.

Just brainstorming here. :)
