Perhaps the contest should consist of several tracks, maybe 3-5. Each track would have a different challenge, and each "masterer' could chose to master any or all of the tracks.

Brad B's forum has something called WOMP that's essentially a mastering contest as well. I think that some of his rules would be a good guideline.

How about a MacGyver Mastering Contest? You get a magnifying glass, a blank CD-R, an Alesis 3630, and a roll of duct tape

I used the plastic toothpick in mine to set ribbons in mics. Seriously, it is the perfect tool for that

here's what I think. the mix should be average to good but not great. the 'client' should basically be asking to make their okay mix be sellable to the public and play on a lot of systems and perhaps radio. the file format isn't too important but 20/44.1 or 20/48 should be enough, right? the entires should be in .wav format because not all mp3 converters are equal. we could pick best overall and most creative master. or turn each entry into a poll.
