New House (again)...How's this so far?

Hey,

Just moved a month ago and we all know what fun that is.

Still getting used to the room, besides the fact that I haven't even had time to record anything anyway.

This is the first thing I've been able to do. Besides the bax in the chorus that I should have muted, I still need to add vocals.

How's it sound so far????

Yeah, that flange isn't printed on the track, I can take it off. I'm not sure about it either. I might have gone overboard on that part. I did 4 snare tracks for that part and I wanted to do something weird with it.

Regarding my comment on the flange part, I should elaborate. It's not so much that I thought it was a bad idea, but it seemed a bit abrupt. Maybe mix in some more dry signal to tone it down?

I think the flangesnare part would work well without the flangesnare. One thing the tune doesn't use is a breakdown. I think it would be kewel to just let the bass and kick and 2&4 time on a sock play backdrop for some "Don't Fear the Reaper"-style minor 9ths and susses on chorused electric or acoustic.....an ambient layout with sustaining note texure: a breakdown , and spacey sustained stuff...which'll contrast nicely with the general upness of the tune, and ramp-up to the big finish. That's what I hear. YMMV :^)

Good tune and recording. My nit is that when guitar center drops out...at least in one place I noticed...the guts kinda left the tune. I'll go listen again, and give you the time....

OK...gtctr drops at 19, 55, 1:40...and at the solo. I hear it coming back in..and I understand you're using it as a piece of arranging; but when it exits, the balls fall off the tune. It breaks a rockin', aggressive flow for me. And when it drops out for the solo, the support underneath the solo goes soft. The solo would bust sky with gtctr underneath, I think. I think gtctr is worthy of chugging unbroken...and whanging under the solo. I think it'd keep the boil going???

I really appreciate all that, Jeff. All good ideas to try, and they're all do-able without having to track, just a matter of arranging what I already have.

I'll have to try a few things with the drum "solo" in the middle. One of the things I'll try is taking it right out, as you suggest, and putting something more musical in there.

I also see what you're saying about the guitar dropping out. I'll see how the solo sounds with it in the mix. As far as it dropping out in the other parts, keep in mid that this is where vocals will come in and fill up the center. You still may have a point, but we'll have to hear it with vocals to know for sure.

I like the flangey snare, but maybe it's a little too thick. Keep the effect, but maybe dial it back a little. Guitars and bass sound good. The thing that sticks out to me is with the kick and snare. Your kick is really dry and punchy, but it sounds like you're getting a lot of snare from the overheads, which is fine, but it kind of creates an imbalance between the super dry kick and slightly roomy snare sound. I think it would sound more natural if the kick and snare sounded like they are coming from the same space in the mix.

Thanx man. I definitely hear what you're saying about the different "ambiences" on the snare and kik. That's fixable. It's not so much that you're hearing the snare from the overheads, I do have the close mic in there. But I put a lot of reverb on the drums at mixdown, and whenever I do that, I'm always scared to put too much on the kik and muddy up the low end. What I'll do is tame the verb on the rest of the kit and maybe add a little on the kik to balance it out.

I like the snare part, I'm just not sold on the flanging, or the amount of flanging. But I'm not going to re-track it and make it toms. I definitely hear a snare part there. That's 4 seperate snare tracks mixed together. I'm not going through all that again with toms!!!!

I listened to it & filled the gaps with an imaginary RAMI vocal - it works well.
I like the flanged drums - it took me back to mid 70's and Budgie.
It's sounds like it's going to be killer exp with the suggestions the provided bvox gave.
I don't know about a breakdown, I'd have to hear the flow with the vocal before deciding whether it's appropriate to the structure esp with the little space that might be used for the flanged drums - oh & subtly isn't needed for the flanged bit - it's meant to be noticed isn't it?
A fab foundation mate.
I look forward to the next step.

I see what you did with the flanger, and I think it's appropriate to separate it from the bed drum track. Maybe a timbale would work better, but the flanger works as it is.

Overall the track could use a little verb.
