So, I bought the Gearbox VST upgrade for my Toneport and decided to work on something new. I like being about to change my tone after the fact.

The song is called "Endless Emotion Part 1". Why part 1 you ask... It is going to be a 5 part instrumental, as in... this song rolls into the next, I'm just splitting it up so I don't have a 50 minute song... It's A tuning at the start, but about 2 minutes through, I went to open G tuning, which is pretty dang low tuned... even for me. The baritone seemed to hold it well though. Have a listen. Also, it's a free download on my soundclick, not just a stream like I've been doing with my other songs...

just listening now..

In the start the rhythmguitar kinda buries everything else..intermittently..
That gets better, very good at 3:00-->
interesting enough. Not missing vocals.

nice mix.

REALLY HEAVY.

I my self have no vocalist for my doings, and never much thought of words in the first place..

This sounds good.

second time over..

some slower parts remind me of Akercocke..
REALLY like the heavier riffing from 3:00-->

Darn!!..
...gotta try this artsy stuff myself with metal.. always just banged three riffs together and ran with it... :D

..also envious of that HIGH-GAIN sound..

Good shit!..

Wow this is insanely long. There was a band that did this but I can't remember the name. They released a cd with only one 40 minute song.

1 40 minute song... geez... At least this will turn into about 50 minutes, but 5 seperate tracks, but essentially one song.

I think the patch for the rhythem guitars may have a bit much pressance... Next time I work on the song, I'm gonna see what I can do with it.

I thought about doing vocals for it, but I think it doesn't really need it. All the tempo change ups, all the musical change ups... Also, some of the melody guitar parts I do are kind of like what the vocals would be I guess.

Cool stuff man...I don't hear anything that I dislike. Good bottom end, and the rest is still pretty clear. There are a few spots that seem to build up, but that's not all bad...just gives it a very dark tone.

Cool tune man.

Wow. That is pretty heavy. Certainly not my style, but its got some cool riffs and I honestly couldn't stop listening. Made me want to bash in my TV. Please don't screw it up with some crappy screamo vocals. :p

Guitars sound great - especially around the 7:40 mark. I think the snare could come up more and the cymbals sound thin, but overall its one fantastic, heavy, long-ass song. Great job! :)

The 40 minute long song would be (I'm guessing) Edge of Sanity. The album/song is called Crimson. Green Carnation has since outdone them with a 60 minute long track/album called Light of Day, Day of Darkness. This song has kinda the same vibe going on. As far as criticism goes, I would say that this song could use some work on the transitions between parts, and some vocals would be nice, but on the whole it is pretty damn impressive. Production wise it is pretty good. How did you do the drums?

I look forward to hearing the other parts. I hope you post them.

I use DFHS for drums... And do some work on them...

As far as the transitions go, I actually had a death metal band I played guitar for that was somewhat like this, minus the ambient clean parts because our singer was a close minded metal head. There are other bands that have the sporatic(I think thats the word) transitions...

I don't think I want any vocals on this bad boy here... Everytime I lay vocals, the people that like screaming and growling are like... "Hey, whats with all the clean singing and harmonies and such". When I scream or growl the other people are like, "whats with all the damn noise"... LOL... I can't win.

Honestly, I think the change ups and diversity stands on it's own with out vocals... I'll probably add more guitar melodies too. I already started work on part to and plan on finishing that up tommarow... Some of the riffs in part 2 are going to be some of that odd timing craziness that I like.

On a side note, I can't start new threads in the dang forums... I had some questions about microphones because I'm going to start recording my rock band instead of using DFHS and the Toneport. I'm not sure what is wrong with me and these forums...

Yeah, I figured DFH. That program rules, I just wish it wasn't such a resource pig. You are right that there are other bands that have what I would call abrupt changes. And the abruptness isn't exactly what I am criticizing. It is the fact that every transition in the song is the same with one riff fading out while the next fades in. IMO transitions are absolutely vital to song writing. Unfortunately, they are also the hardest part of it. The repetitive nature of the transitions give the impression that you just slapped a bunch of good riffs together. Writing better transitions would turn this from a good track to a great track. As for vocals, I hear you on that one. My girlfriend constantly complains about death metal vocals in my bands songs. Vox are just another thing that I think could turn this into a really great song.

I'm not a Gen Xer but I don't have the attention span to listen all the way through on a computer sorry.

I use fades from the cleans to the heavies and vise versa. I just like the way it sounds. The whole song won't be like that of course.

Rayc, I understand... This is more for the heavy crowd I guess. I think it would be considdered a niche category. This is also the reason I don't play in bands like this anymore, people generally like simplicity and catchy hooks. None of this progressive craziness. I like it though.

monkeymanx,
Don't get me wrong - I LOVE prog, & long psych stuff BUT I can't sit at a comp & listen for longer than about 5 mins without getting up & going walkies - I'm not able, recently, to crank it through the stereo & speakers my comp is hooked up to so am on a short leash with h/phones.
Perhaps later

I'll hopefully be done with the whole 5 part song in the next coming weeks so you can burn it to a CD for easy and fun listening...

I was thinking of getting the VIP thing on soundclick so I could upload the 320kbps version for people to download, but I don't know if I feel like paying for it. It would be a big difference in quality though. I guess I'll figure it out when the time comes...

On a side note, I can't post in the forums for new topics and am trying to get some recommendations are some good mics for Drum overheads, room mics, acoustic guitar, and vocals.

I was looking at the Samson C02s which seemed to be a good choice for overheads as far as bang for the buck. Alot of people also like the Studio Projects B1 for a large condesner for bang for the buck. And of course the MXL stuff. Too many mics out there. I already have about 6 SM57s at my disposal and am getting a AKG D112 for the kick drum...
