Righto i need a new guitar... my old SG Special copy is falling to bits and it seems pointless to patch it up at cost.

Now i've been playing for donkeys years but i ain't that great cos i never practiced for the best part of my playing years, (lazy sod or just too busy either way) so i have fack all knowledge of decent guitars other than a few mates suggestions and but i cannot afford much more that £300 (i spent the rest of my dough on the studio).

I know you guys are gonna try and persuade me to spunk around a grand on a decent model but thats unrealistic when you don't have the cash.

So any suggestions on a postcard please - and i prefer fixed tune-o-matic gibson stylee bridges too.

I know i could ask this anywhere but advice is pretty sound on here.

Cheers

Thats about 700.00 american right? You could get a nice Carvin for that money. Check out their website and have them send you a catalogue. I recieved one here in the states 4 days after I subscribed on line. Some nice guitars for the money.

If the exchange does = around $700, there are several guitars you can afford. If you like the feel of the Gibson knockoff, why not get a real Gibson or Epiphone? Musician's Friend has a cheaper Les Paul model for $799 (all prices American dollars), and just about EVERY Epiphone is under $700.

It looks like ESP makes a few guitars under $700 with a Gibson style tailpiece.

If you're feeling like a change, you can buy just about any Fender for that price.

Just something to think about. Tell us what you get...we'll be interested in your selection.

Cheers guys

I'll take note of the names.
I've kinda done some research on the several guitars i like such as the Esp Viper series (which over here is about £500), Epiphone E-Series, Les Paul Gothic Series and several other i can't think of right now...but problem being i can't find any place that sells these other than internet sales (like Piedog), or non locally i.e miles away. Unless anyone from London call tell me otehrwise.

Also may i note that the price difference can sometimes be vasdt bearing in mind a lot of products we have over here originate in the US and therefore cost more by the time they get here. Sometimes not but is not always comparable.

So as well as model, i was curious as to playability, quality, durabilty and so on..if anyone knows that is or has some experience as to what is best for the price?

Thanks

Are you in a place where you can get a deal on something used, old bloke? Get something good, that you really like, sacrifice a few extra quid. You won't regret it old chap.

happy thanksgiving

I'm pretty impressed with what I've seen on Carvin's website myself.

I can afford one guitar this year and I'm locked up with choices.
If I could have two, I think I'd go with DeArmonds X155 (?). I've been wanting a big fat Jazz piece.
The Ernie Ball MusicMan grows on me more every time I see one.
What to do?
;)

Static,
look around the shops for 2nd hand Patrick Eggle guitars. They are English made and up there with the best.

ChrisO

I have an Epiphone Basher. Very sturdy and sounds great. More than worth the roughly $200 I paid for it.

Sods

OK cheers guys, but get this, checked out the Carvin.co.uk website and the US one and the prices are MORE expensive over here in £ than $US price bunch of tight ass wankers or what.

That aside, i was pondering getting an E-Series Epiphone but the low cost makes me wonder exactly where they have cut corners and are you really getting long term value for quality etc...

But realistically i don't have much choice for my pounds, any one know what the Ibanez budget GX70 and GR70?? i think are like worth a butchers or not?

Any finally anyone know where i can even get a sniff of a patrick eggle guitar as the web address is umm buggered. Denmark street in London sells mostly new guitars but seems not to stock what i would like or no second hand doings. I think i finding a second hand one is gonna be like finding a needle in haystack especially one i can afford, alas..hmm its xmas maybe i can scab a few quid off my old man hehe

Cheers

Gibson Les Paul Studio

All the great tone...just without the fancy trim and inlays...I've seen them run as low as $600...

I haven't played one or anything, but I just noticed that Paul Reed Smith is making a lower line model of guitar now for around $600 called the Santana. It has a Les Paul type tailpiece (single bar in this case). It looks pretty nice, and if it plays a fraction as nice as a regular PRS, that's better than most.

Musicians Friend sells them.

the Ibanez GAX70? goes for $190 US and not sure what the GR70 is......

in that price range..well, ive said it once and ill say it again......

$$$ for $$$, or pound for pound, youll get more out of Yamaha Guitars....the Pacifica 112M goes for $149 US and is a quite decent guitar....as you move up in $$$, you get nicer and nicer.....id say the quality of the $149 Pacifica is just as good as a $399 Mexican Fat Strat......
