Our drummer is investing in a new kit to replace his much abused, and ageing pearl setup. I would love to hear some suggestions for a good kit in and around the $1200 mark. He would like a tight hiphop/funk sound.

Thanks,

Pap.

I believe a 5 piece set of the Tama Starclassic line can be had for in or around $1000-1200. From everything that I've heard - they're great sounding drums

is that 'tight hiphop/funk' sound the product of smaller toms? or can it be had with tuning/heads? I would think maybe a combo of both

I personally have a Yamaha Beech Custom and they sound amazing - $1200 might be a bit low unless you want to go used...
I was looking around the net, though - 'cause Yamaha just discontinued the Beech Custom line (replaced with Beech Custom Absolute) and alot of places were selling 'em out at really good prices...

Well, find out what sizes he has, and give those two us.
and is he just looking to replace the actual drums, or all the Hardweare as well?
Also, is that $1,200 in US dollars?

If you guys are in Ireland (The website suggests that you are) and since you're saying a he would like a tight hiphop/funk sound-I would suggest he buy the individual drums from th Premier Cabria series.. Since they are regional, you might be able to get the best price on them.
they are a killer sounding drum, and I would say get the following:

12" & 16" toms
20" kick
5x14" snare

I just think if you're using 1 floor tom, anything smaller than a 16" is too small...just my opinion.

Then buy his hardware from a top of the line series....I'm not sure how strong the Hardware that comes prepackeged in the Cabria line is.
Or, have him take a look at the Sonor 2000 and other economical series....they are killer drums that are reasonably priced.

If he wants an economical but asskicking snare, tell him to look for a used Ludwig Acrolite. Crank it into Stewart Copeland's tuning range, and man that thing kicks ass! It's got an Aluminum shell, and for some reason, it's just a killer sounding snare.

I don't wanna work
I jus' wanna bang on de drum all day

Thanks for that...alot of it went over my head as I have less than no clue about drums, but I'll pass it on to John and he'll appreciate it.

G'night gents,

Pap.
