Captain Sea Boots
Hey guys. A little nervous to make my first mp3 post. Please give me feedback. I have a thick skin, so you can be rough if you like. I appreciate everyone's opinions here. We just finished recording a 4 song demo in my basement. The song is called "Fallen."

This production has "Fallen" and can't get up. Sorry, couldn't resist--it's not *that* bad.

Typical amature basement recording. Hardly surprising, but it doesn't sound good (like most stuff done with this many limitations). I remember doing stuff along this lines many years ago (in fact, someone this week made fun of one of them, mistaking it for something I had done recently).

Drums and guitar are extremely wimpy and distant. Total lack of low end.

A few timing issues in there. Most of the time it is on, but there's one part that falls apart a bit. This is inexcusable because you have all the TIME in the world to get things right when you record in your basement.

In general, it's obvious you have *some* skill. Keep working at it, you will get there. What this song needs is a better mix. With that being said, I feel that there are still a few tracking issues to contend with.

Next time around, tune the drums more solidly. While they aren't horribly out of tune a better job would make the toms sound better.

By the way, the singer sounds pretty good. In general the band seems pretty tight. Just up the production/recording knowledge and effort and you may have something cool very soon.

As it stands I give this a C- in the grand scheme of things, and a solid B for basement recording.

Sweet, I didn't fail.I was quite disappointed with the guitar sounds overall. We were in a hurry to hand something out, so we tracked and mixed what we had. I definitely want to spend a lot of time working on getting some punch to the guitars.

I can't really give you mixing advice cos I'm a newbie myself but there's potential there. I'm sure someone who knew what they were doing could make you all sound great.

Musically, it was there. But it was a bit muddy in the recording aspect. The amazing thing was you kept my interest for almost 6 minutes. That's hard to do.

Not bad for a basement recording. I've heard worse.

So...

More importantly, what advice do you professional guys have for us (WMD)getting better guitar sounds (i.e mic placement, compression, eq, etc.)? I absolutely love the sound of my Ibanez S470DXQM-NF/Crate XT120R amp combination, but I couldn't seem to get a great reproduction of that sound when recording.

I should also note that in this particular case we didn't really have all the time in the world to record for a couple reasons. 1) We REALLY needed to get the demo done quickly (even if it was not great quality) just to be able to play at some of our local bars and such. These are not high quality places - we just had to hand them something for them to let us play. 2) We did this in P-dadda's basement and the wife and child probably got a little annoyed that we were invading their household so often. Anyway, just thought I'd throw that out there.

there's plenty of cool sounding things that have come out of people's basements...

There are. This wasn't among them.

damn, once the guitar and drums hit, the song just fell apart production wise. I don't know, the instruments are way too quiet unless you want a pop song.

Swatsds, not sure what you mean. Are you talking about the "chorus?"

well, there's the bass and guitar intro, then the drums start.
it sounded normal quality until then. but you can really tell the low quality of the guitar and drums, but I'm sure you know this.

There is actually no bass. Both parts are guitar.
Also, how much could mastering add punch to this mix. It's not good enough where I will actually pay for mastering, but I was just curious.
