Look Mom, I can play!
Hi, I have just upgraded my mobo to a 2.4 Gig P4 with 512 RAM. It has win 98SE and I use a delta66+omni s/card. Sequencer is HS2002.

These are a few issues that I am having problems with:

HP 890c printer driver

Everytime I boot the machine, I get a message saying that windows has detected new hard ware and is searching for the driver. Needless to say, the driver is installed, I installed it off the HP CD disk.I have since d/loaded the latest driver from the HP website but I still get the message every time I boot the puter up. How can I stop it doing that?

Windows Mixer
I would like to see the windows mixer/volume control icon on my task bar where it used to be but now it doesn't appear. Nor can I open it from programs>accessories>entertainment. In control panel>multi-media> audio, the recording and playback buttons are disabled (greyed out) as is the check box to show the volume control icon on the taskbar.

I have a radeon 128Rage pro video card and installed ati multimedia from the acomanying CD. Do you think this program has disabled my windows volume controls or is it something else? I also have windows media player 9.1 installed.

Radeon 128 pro video card driver

I located the new driver for this card on the Ati site and d/loaded the latest driver. When I try to load it, I get a message saying that the driver cannot be installed on my card Any suggestions, its a huge driver file, 11.9meg.

Enabling midi

I have an audio only card. My mobo supports midi, which I have enabled in the bios. This enables Roland drivers to be selected in HS2002 (Sonar lite) midi driver windows. But I still can't hear any midi playback. Normally, this is where I would reach for the windows mixer record/playback program to check that midi isn't muted. But as you can see from the above, I can't. Any suggestions?

Sorry for so many questions, but I have a screaming machine and no music!

Ugh, sorry Paul... right now, I only have a clue for one...

Well, if you activate it in the BIOS, it means you have an acces to your Joystick/MIDI port. Thus you can use it to attach external MIDI devices with dedicated MIDI kit/cable. It doesn't mean you HAVE internal MIDI devices. And it cannot be controlled via windows mixer.

All Delta cards bypass the Windows Mixer rendering it useless. You have to use the M-Audio Delta control panel to make any volume changes.

I think you need to take a closer look at exactly what video card you have. There is no such thing as the Radeon 128 Rage Pro chipset. The Rage 128 chipset was found in older cards and was replaced by the Radeon. You have either one or the other and each has its own set of drivers.

Thanks for the replies fellas. Here is the latest:

Video card
Brzillian, you are right, it is actually an Xpert 2000 pro, using the Ati 128 Pro 3D accelerator. I'll check the Ati site again to make sure I got the right driver.

Windows Mixer
Surely the windows mixer is relevent in terms of if the midi channel was muted or the "what U hear" is enabled? Are you suggesting that the whole of the windows mixer is bypassed? For recording and playback?

Midi
Jameyz, I understand what you are saying. For me, I don't need a physical midi connection cos I have USB. So how do I get to hear midi sounds from HS2002 if I only have audio on my delta+omni? Don't tell me I have to re-install my S/blaster?

Printer driver loading on boot up
I could really do with a fix for this:(

That's it Paul.

The sounds from the Edirol VSC DXi in my opinion are no better than the wavetable synthesised sounds from your old SB, but it's better than total silence! :)

The HS2002 tutorial Working With Soft Synths covers it extremely well.

Hi Bluesmeister, thanks for your reply. Looks like I'll be messing around with the vsc for a while then:)

And I booted up tyhis morning with no message saying that windows is searching for my printer drivers either:)

Windows Mixer/volume control
Seems the windows mixer/volume controls are greyed out/disabled because my new mobo has an audio option that needs drivers loaded before it will work. If you don’t load the drivers, it would appear to the mobo that you haven’t got any need for the windows mixer! And if you do load the drivers, and yet don’t need them because your sound card is detected, it automatically disables the mobo audio drivers! At least this is the theory, I will put this to the test later in the week when I am back home again.

Video card driver
Regarding the video card, it appears that I did d/load the correct driver but it was a self extracting file which needs the previous version of the driver deleting before loading the new one. Again, I will try this out later. Seems I should read the manuals better before leaping in.
