This one has a dual ribbon. I wonder how long before we see the Nady and, possibly, Shinybox incarnations.

Thats made by Chinese Alctron, the maker of Nady and other "China" ribbons.

So many ribbon mics

Apparently SE electronics ribbon is awesome although I've no experience of it YET!!

It's a kind of mic I find very intriguing

SE 2200a's are excellent LDC's comparable to a neuman TLM103 I have & I can just be curious about the rest of SE untill I win the lottery

Here's hoping

I've got one on the way. Looking forward to trying it out.

...I also have purchased one of the Stellar (Alctron) dual-ribbon microphones...I hope to receive it shortly and I will post my impressions and possibly some sound clips once I have tracked with it...

That is the same mic as the one I ordered in the group purchase. It looked as if it may be a great vocal mic. You'll probably have your mic before I do so I'd like to know what your impressions are. Oh yeah check your PM's will you. ;)

Hey...if either of you guys end up having second thoughts about that mic, let me know. I'm kickin' myself for not picking up a pair when the group purchase came around... :o I only ordered one of the HRM-14's

...Peter Bloch (Stellar Microphones) is a gentleman...100% positive feedback on Ebay...recommended source... :D

yea...i just had an email exchange with the seller. seems like a straight up guy. he's stocking capsules for most of those new chineese mics that went up on the group buy awhile back. nothing for the dual ribbons yet but he says he's working on it.

I'm gonna keep a close eye on it...thanks!

I'd be interested in hearing what you think. Double ribbon mics are rarer than single ribbons, the two most common being the Beyer M160 and M130, both of which are substantially more expensive than the Alctron (although not as expensive as other ribbons like Royer, Coles or AEA).

...the explanation for the purpose of a double ribbon element is likened to using a large diaphragm in a condenser mic...improved frequency response, and improved clarity (of course the circuitry would have to be capable of taking advantage of additional ribbon response)...when the 2 ribbons are aligned side-by-side (as in this particular design) it should enhance the mics ability to capture a single source (voice or instrument)...
...other dual-ribbon designs place the ribbons at different angles inside the mic to enhance stereo imaging and create a broader soundfield...
...my intended use is as a vocal mic, so I'm very interested in testing this product...

...I have received my mic from Stellar (same as the Alctron Nickel/Gold version pictured above) and I would like to make some first impression remarks...first of all, the fit and finish of the microphone is impressive...nothing cheap or chincy on this mic...compact, solidly constructed and weighty...no rough edges...very nicely finished...and the wooden storage box and shockmount are equally impressive...if I did not know the origin of the mic, I would easily assume it cost considerably more than I paid...I would venture to guess, no one will be disappointed by this purchase...

...I only plugged it in briefly to make sure it was working properly, and it has a very nice, smooth response (voice dialog only thus far)...not at all dull like some ribbon mics at this pricepoint...I am anxious to try it on vocals...I am awaiting the arrival of a new mic-pre with substantial gain (about 80dB) at which time I will record tracks for posting...

...one other thing...the shockmount included with my mic had a faulty hinge...I contacted Peter Bloch (Stellar Microphones) and sent him a picture of the mount's problem...he immediately shipped a replacement mount out to me...here's where the issue of customer service enters into the price equation...in my particular circumstance, and because the shockmount is specific to this mic's application, the extra cost I incurred by purchasing from a distributor rather than a group buy, became money well spent...there's a reason Stellar has 100% positive feedback on eBay...much thanks to Peter B... :D

...sound files to follow...

Wow, you got that fast! I was watching that on ebay to see how the pricing would turn out. What 2 days between purchase and delivery?

Stellar shipped Priority Mail...I'm tellin' ya!...I'm very impressed...

I'm thinkin' about taking the other unit that didn't sell. Looks like he's lowered the price about $10.

...one last remark about Stellar's customer service...I received the replacement shockmount today (also shipped Priority Mail) and included with the shockmount was a check for $8.35 (the return Priority Mail postage so that I can ship back the faulty mount at no cost to me)...
...I know that I've already complimented Peter Bloch on his exceptional follow-up to the defective shockmount, but I gotta say "it don't get better than this!"...this guy is on point...I will continue to deal with him and I recommend anyone looking for a great deal (short of the "group buy" of course) on one of the very capable new Chinese ribbon mics, give Peter/Stellar a shot...he's a gentleman...nuff said ;)

I think it would be a treat to hear some of your tracks when you get a chance!

Both Beyers are completely different animals. The ribbons are actually in front of each other, unlike side-by-side RM4. There are two reasons for that:
1) Since the ribbons are in parallel (unlike in series in RM4) the combined ribbon impedance is lower and gives lower noise figure.
2) The second ribbon (right behind the front one) creates time delay--shifting pressure gradient it improves HF response.

The kind of arrangement used in RM4 was used in some commercial mics. From top of my head I can remember Oktava ML52-02 and more obscure vintage Geloso double ribbon.

Yeah, it looks like a typical commercial/marketing explanation from website. There is no even one word of truth in all this BS. It seems they don't understand themselves about advantages and processes involved. Sad.
