ART Studio MP V3

just saw this today...I have the studio MP and am looking to get another maybe.......just wondering if this V3 buisness is worth $20..i can get the mp for $99 at zzounds..

I haven't used that particular model, but I have used a Dual MP (rack mount version). It was ditched in favor of a Presonus unit. The ART mic pres don't get many favorable comments around here, but both the M-Audio Audio Buddy and DMP3 do. Those might not be what you're looking for though, as it appears that the V3 adds a bit of coloration. In that case, I would recommend looking into a comparable Presonus mic pre.

I looked at the Art-link...

and it made me wondering how the folks here regard the Art Pro MPA?

That V3 thingy looks pretty funny=pocket size WITH a little VU-meter.
And that ART tube-channel, is THAT any good?

yeah.......im torn between the audio buddy and another ART mp......or a joemeek mq3..or the dmp3...or the blue tube...

now, i use the mp when recording on a tascam 424 or my pc (ntrack):

v67m

cilp-on condenser for acoustic guitar

emg acs soundhole pickup..the ART does warm this up nicely.

i'd like something else to run the clip-on AND the pickup through...either into an 2-channel acoustic amp or for recording.

i understand the audio buddy is very clean with little or no coloration..which i may like also..

i dunno since i've never used any other pre than the mp (except in the studio a few times years ago and i knew nothing of recording equipment then) ...

the <$100 cost is not a huge factor in that i'd go to $200 or so...

"im torn between the audio buddy and another ART mp......or a joemeek mq3..or the dmp3...or the blue tube."

Out of these, I vote for the joemeek. You might as well get something different for variety. And if you don't already have them, it has EQ and compression in case you need them on the way in.

Then, why not pick up the audio buddy a little later. This will cover you on the clean side, plus stereo recording.

IMO, you would then have a nice selection of preamps to get going with on your 4-track, and beyond..until you're ready to spend about $1000-$2000 on a preamp.

I vote for the Audio Buddy. At $80 for two channels it is almost a no brainer.Very quiet and transparent,I love my little guy.

They don't? They used to...
I said they don't get many favorable comments. I've seen a couple positive comments about them, but I'd say more negative. I have only been here since February. But anyway, like I was saying earlier, my old band had a Dual MP that we replaced with a Presonus unit. Of course, the Presonus cost twice as much and has only one channel, but it's clearly a better mic pre.

about 2 years ago the art stuff was "the next big thing" around here.....just like the audio buddy and dmp3 are now

Good point, cavedweller. In music as in recording there is the "flavor of the week." Art was cool a couple of years ago given the cheap mic pre landscape. There is alot more offered now at the cheap and midrange level so the $80 art's have been relegated to irrelevant, given the other options. I think the pro channel and pro mpa are pretty cool. Although not my first choice for a pre in the $500 range, I could see picking up a used one down the road.
