New ADAT user having some problems

I recently bought a used ADAT XT20. I tried recording on it, but I am having some trouble. The tape seems to skip around during playback. I formatted the tape in my machine. Also, during recording, the Play and Record LED's blink, and never remain constant. I am not that familar with the ADAT, but I have followed all of the instructions, but it does not seem to be working correctly. There are no errors on the machine. When I try to play back what I recorded, the Play LED also continues blinking, and some sound comes through but it seems to be skipping or something. Could it be the ADAT I bought is defective, or is this more likely a tape/format problem. Thanks for your help in advance.
 
I'd format a new tape (not the old one again) and try it again, but your ADAT sounds sick.
 
Fix-it Man

Being new at the ADAT I have no idea where I could possibly get it checked out. Anyone know of a place around Philadelphia. Also, I am going to try and get one of the preformatted BASF tapes. I'll let you know what happens.
 
BASF tape

I just went out and bought a BASF preformatted 20 bit tape. When I put it in my ADAT XT, it says that there is no good time code on the tape. Anyone have any suggestions? I am dying here.
 
That machine needs a trip to the Doctor for sure then....

For that kind of problem, there is nothing the user can do, it requires service.

Last thing to try. Take the cover off, get a bottle head cleaner and some Q-tips and GENTLY clean the head and tape path. If it's telling you "no good time code" it can't read the tape and it may just be dirty. It's worth a shot. If that doesn't do it, it's off to Heir Doktor. Good luck.
 
Point of info...

Actually, if you've never cleaned the heads on a unit like that, I'd advise only cleaning the tape path and not the actual heads.... you could throw off the head alignment if you don't know the proper procedure.....
