Neve DIY Preamps Scematics

i've seen some people on ebay sell schematics for neve brand preamps, compressors, eq's, etc. i was just wonder does anyone have any knowledge of how good DIY preamps are? is it worth buying the kit? will i get better sound quality then buying one of those 100-200 preamps?

Schematics are easy to get... that's not the problem. The transformers are a bitch... and between the transformers, the board layouts, etc... there are a whole slew of variables that will come into play when getting out the shovel and trying to dig up the past.

7th Circle Audio has "DIY" kits for doing old 'Neve (tm)' modules. I've never heard one, so I don't know if they suck or not... but lord knows they couldn't be any worse than the Vintech stuff.

If there was more feedback on the 7th circle pres I think people would migrate in that direction. I just don't want to end up with $400 worth of parts or worse a preamp that does not sound as good as the RNP.

Anyone built one of those things?

i'm doing a DIY pre similar to the one on seventhcircle...i'll let ya know how it turns out...the big advantage i have though is my cousin is an audio engineer so he knows what he's doing and understands the heiroglyphic schematics and has the tools to test the frequency response and what not..

7th circle guarantees a finished, working product, and I’m betting it’ll smoke the RNP (MHO, of course)

None at all...

I haven't found the Vintech stuff to sound exciting enough to live up to the 'N word pedigree'... other people seem to have them acceptable, but I haven't. My opinion certainly doesn't seem to have effected sales for Vintech in either direction... so who really gives a shit what I think of it anyway.

I don't know if the 7th Circle thing will live up to the 'N word pedigree' or not... but it couldn't be much worse than the Vintech piece.
