Well I have gone through some microphones in the past few months such as (vocals only):

ADK A-51: I liked this one, warm and very smooth (love that)
Shure KSM27: I liked this one on my voice
Studio Projects B1: Didnt like this one, too thin sounding...
Rode NT1A: Hate this mic, WAY too harsh on my voice...
Blue Bluebird: This one...uhh..decent mic but not working on my voice...kinda brings out too much low end and shrill high end.

I'm looking to spend about $550 on a mic (ebay price) so about $700 retail. My voice is mid-range/deep. So I need something smooth n clean. I know the best way to find out what I like is to go try some but my local GC only has mics on the shelf that I have no interest in buying right now...they say theyre waiting on more shipments...so just give me recommendations, I was thinking about a Rode NTK, K2, KSM44, AT4050, but open to other suggestions.

Ditto. For a condensor, my AT4050 is the go to mic for nearly everything. It my not be the mic I end up using, but it sounds good on most everything and great on everything else. Adding the ribbon and doing Blumlein or M/S would be pretty sweet.

Beyer M130 (or M160) ribbon....... have to try it to understand why it's worth the money....

I will echo the 4050, but it's a real clean mic. If you're wanting to go a more colorful route, I love my NTK, but I'd suggest you try and see if you can check out each mic before you buy one...

Have you thought about jumping in on the Ribbon group buy?

I'm going to go way out on a limb, and suggest either the ADK A51 or the Shure KSM-27.

Im thinking I'd like something thats a step up from those.

I've heard the KSM44 and thought it sounded
a LOT better than the 27.

Which ADK A51? Just about every mic ADK makes is an Area-51 of some sort. The Hamburg and Vienna are worth evaluating, as is the ADK TL. There are dozens and dozens of vocal mics in your price range, many of which would probably do just fine, others not as well. The trick is finding one of the better ones.

I had the $150 adk a-51, not sure the model. I'll look into the ADK TL/TC...right now Im narrowed down to...

1. Shure KSM44
2. Audio Technica AT4050
3. ADK TC or TL
4. Rode K2

Shure SM7. It has beat out my condensers and ribbons for vocals (and other things) on the last three recording projects, including an AT-4050, GT MD3, Beyer M834, Neumann Gefell M582h, Beyer M500, Audix VX10 and an AEA R84 - all of which cost more. Works great for male and female vocals. Give it a try and see how it works with your voice. I need to buy another one.

I think his point is that seeing how he has heard the mics and likes the sound of the mics.... he should quit while he is ahead.

I also have to give the SM7 props. Great mic. It is my number two in line behind the AT4050. The SM7 ends up on vocals, cabs, horns, and drums all the time.

...it worked for Michael Jackson ("Thriller" album) and the Red Hot Chili Peppers (newest album) not to mention countless numbers of other major artist productions...the SM7/7B is the "sleeper" vocal mic (overlooked by many)...it's got my vote...

With a EMU 1820 Recording Interface w/o pre? I don't think so. Ribbons need TONS of clean pre (around +60-65dB).

I'd recommend a Rode NTK (tooobey) or an AT4050 if you want a clean sound. I currently use a Rode NT2-A which is fantastic as well. The polar pattern are very useful.

The ADK A-51 TC gets recommended very often, but when I heard it on the Listening Room CD, I was less than impressed to be honest.
