You're gonna dig the AT4050. I have never complained about this mic. Get one now! Meanwhile, I can't resist, I'm picking up an sm7!

Check out the ADK Hamburg or Vienna. Depending on your vocal style either of those mics will do a great job and can be bought for less than $300 each. Another suggestion is the Hamburg or Vienna II which are now just coming out for retail. Word is they are going to street for around the 6 to 7 hundred area so they would be at the top of your budget. I haven't heard either of them yet but I've heard rumors they both are fantastic vocal mics.

You didn't mention what mic pre you are using so the above recommendations are based on you having a decent mic pre. If you need a good pre down the road check out the ADK AP-1 or AP-2. With its changeable xformers it is a great tool to have in your studio. Here's a link below. Good luck.

Yeah, let's hear it, man!

...OK...these are the "dry" tracks...no treatment (no eq, comp or reverb)...SM7B thru an Amek 9098...they are for a "vintage" reggae project...old school style:

...and here's the same ruff vocals with the instrumental track (again, no treatment or mix yet)...vocal tracks will be edited and treated for the final mixes...

With a EMU 1820 Recording Interface w/o pre? I don't think so. Ribbons need TONS of clean pre (around +60-65dB).

How does an SM58 sound on it? The modern ribbons have comparable output (within half a dB or so, if my memory serves).

Well I have gone through some microphones in the past few months such as (vocals only):

ADK A-51: I liked this one, warm and very smooth (love that)
Shure KSM27: I liked this one on my voice
Studio Projects B1: Didnt like this one, too thin sounding...
Rode NT1A: Hate this mic, WAY too harsh on my voice...
Blue Bluebird: This one...uhh..decent mic but not working on my voice...kinda brings out too much low end and shrill high end.

I'm looking to spend about $550 on a mic (ebay price) so about $700 retail. My voice is mid-range/deep. So I need something smooth n clean. I know the best way to find out what I like is to go try some but my local GC only has mics on the shelf that I have no interest in buying right now...they say theyre waiting on more shipments...so just give me recommendations, I was thinking about a Rode NTK, K2, KSM44, AT4050, but open to other suggestions.

I have a baritone voice and the sE Electronics Z3300A works well for me.
They go for about $499 street.
Very nice on acoustic guitar too!
