Need Suggestions about Headphones

I am looking to invest in a good set of recording headphones. I'm still in college, so by invest I mean between $50-$150. (If you can convince me to spend more, then I might). I really have no idea where to begin (who makes better quality headphones, what should i be looking for, etc...)

check out the sony or audio technica for around $75 to $100 you can get a pretty decent set.

At the end of the day, hopefully you'll be mixing out of main monitors, so it doesn't make a lot of difference.

I would never use only the cans to mix by though. Big mistake. You can miss an awful lot.
 
Read around. Then be confident in buying Sennheiser HD280s. These are the best headphones I've ever had. I hear things I've never heard before or noticed. Very clear, smooth response... They also isolate well (not extreme isolation by any means but great for tracking) and are very comfortable. I mix on my dynaudio bm5a studio monitors but these headphones are indispensable for checking takes with (i wish i had them when i was recording my bands cd--i would have noticed some problems during tracking).
 
I'll tell you this much...I own both a pair of Sennheiser HD280 Pros and a pair of Sony MDR 7506s



The Sennheisers are a good overall fit, plus they give a linear edge to what you're hearing.

The Sony's feel alot flatter and netural in response. However, if you're not used to them, they are pretty hard to work with. These are definitly the kind of headset that are not really made to impress, but for very specific detailing. I honestly like these better. Tight and abundant bass response.

I think simply trying out a few different sets at the same time will give you something you like, eventually.
 
I've been using the Sony 7506 to mix recently and I've got good results.
You could also look for the Sony 7509 or the AKG K271.
All the above are very good closed headphones for studio monitoring. Mixing with those requires to learn them hard (which I've done...).

I highly disregard the Sennheiser HD280 (or any CLOSED sennheiser cans for that matter...)
 
For tracking, get some of the moreme's. For mixing uhhh don't do it :).
 
AKG 240 or Sony MDR750's.

Props to minime's also.
 
I use Sony MDR-V150 headphones ($20, Wal-Mart), and so does timboz. Very good sound, even for 5x the price. I've gotten enough practice with them that I can rough in a mix pretty decently.
