Hey! and welcome to the world of "i have a recording studio =D"

Well firstly, it depends what you want to do.
The basics for recording would be.

-Mixer
-Audio Interface (Gives better recording quality)
-Pc or Mac
-Studio Monitors and Headphones
-Multitrack Software ( for recording, mixing and mastering )
-Microphone ( Condenser or Dynamic ) Studios prefer Condenser Mics
-Any other thing, like Keyboard, guitar etc......

To start with, I would suggest that you use "Kristal Audio Engine" for the multitrack software, it's absolutely free and very powerful, especially for a beginner.

Well what kind of song are you recording what instruments are you using?
Maybe it would be wise to go to a studio. It will save you loads of time of getting to know about and how to record best. Maybe for you Spending 600$ on studio time is worth more than spending it on low class gear that will take alot of time and effort to begin to get good tracks, and then learning to mix properly.
I'm not trying to scare you off I am just providing options and ideas for you to get your song out. But if you are die hard willing to get your hands dirty into learning the ins and outs of recording, that is respectful too. Good luck:)

Most people don't need a hardware mixer. Multiple inputs directly to computer, and record each input on its own track. Mix down in the box.

Reaper is very popular budget software.

A mixer is nice, because then you can plug multiple instruments in, and still record them separately,....

If you want to buy software and since you are a newbie, I would recommend buying Mixcraft, it's a very powerful program. It can do everything that expensive programs can do, and Mixcraft is much much easier to understand.

Mixcraft is nice as he said ^^. Very easy to understand. I prefer analog over digital mixing tho as you can get more in depth with your tracks. A mixer can record 2+ instruments at once depending on how many tracks you have and the number of tracks it allows you to do at once. You can get a digital recorder, and mixer board, so that eliminates out having to get a computer other than for cd duplication. Like Chik said, I'd think about using a studio with experience if your just looking to record your song. If your wanting the great knowledge of music production, Then go for the studio. It's worth it!

You would need to explain why.

I don't appear to have a problem of lack of depth mixing digitally
