I had decided some time ago to get a new set of monitor speakers. My current Yamaha monitors have had a long and useful life, but I always felt they were a bit too bright and anyway I want a second pair for the second DAW I'm starting to use more.

I had done a search in this forum, and had been watching this thread for some time, but had not reached any decision. I figured I'd decide on something within the next couple of weeks. I do have a preference for something I can buy locally rather than mail order (I'd like to hear them first) and I have been leaning towards passive monitors. I'm aware of the advantages offered by active, but I just feel that passive would be more flexable, and cheaper, and since I'm a hobbyest rather than someone making money from this I have to watch $$$. I'm looking to keep my expeniture somewhere arround $500.

Well, yesterday I picked up an Audiophile 2496 card, and in doing so visited both the local Guitar Center and Mars Music. I ran across a couple of deals that expire Oct 1 - meaning one more day - and I wanted to get some feedback about them:

- Foremost, Guitar Center selling Event 20/20 passives at $299 for a pair. These guys were near the top of my list in that a lot of people here seem to like them, they get good press, and seem to offer a lot for the $$$

- Guitar Center also offering M Audio SP5B powered monitors also for $299.

- Mars Music offering Behringer Truth B2031 active monitors for $399

- Mars offering this package: a pair of Alesis Monitor One MkII passive monitors, an Alesis RA150 amplifier, and a sound proofing kit, all for $399

What do people here think? The 20/20s in particular are tempting to me ...

all i can say is take the alesis off your list, you basically get what you pay for, and if you take out the sound proofing kit, and the amp you're down to about a 100 pair of monitors.

hopefully someone else will chime in.

Why aren't the Yorkville YSM1's on this list?

Thats what I would choose in your predicament.

If I'm not mistaken, Yorkville are sold only mail order, or direct. At least I've never seen any in a music or audio store. Which makes it hard to preview them.

I have the 20/20BAS monitors. They're actives, not passives, and as such, I think they cost a little more.
They're good monitors. Make no mistake about it, when A/B-ing them against the Tannoy Reveals that I also have, I find the 20/20's to offer a better over all response. To listen to the 20/20's for an extended period of time though, I find that ear fatigue sets in quicker than with the Tannoy's.

Yo R White:

There is a home dealer here in Grand Rapids, Mi. I got my Yorks from him. I had to pick them up.

If you want his number I can post it to you and you can check with him about "listening" before buying.

He is a local musician doing a little business for Yorkville. I got his location by contacting Yorkville on line.

I don't think you'll find a closer contact as you can't be too far away from Grand Rapids.

Green Hornet

You can send me an E-mail if you want his name and number which I'll send back via cyber phonics.

GH:D  :p

I'm using the SP5Bs. Really like the sound. A/Bd the 20/20 passives which were not as clear in the hi-mid to hi frequencies. These work great in a small room and are active with built in power. Best deal around IMHO.

I have also seen the SP8Bs around $299 which is a better deal with an 8 inch speaker, more low end.

Green - Actually its about a 3 hour drive from the Detroit area to Grand Rapids. East side to west side of the state. Probably longer than I want to drive. But thanks for the info.

Middleman - Actually it looks like I'll be doing the same thing, I called Guitar Satan and I'm going to try to set up an A/B between the SP5Bs and 20/20 passives. I also found out that there "monthly sale" price is really their every day price.

I think my choice is going to come down to those two - the price is right. GS didn't have the later on display but said they would pull a pair out for me and let me compare. I'll ask about the SP8Bs. I'll be spending my $$$ either tonight, or Friday.

Thanks to everyone for the responses!

Just to complete this thread, I eneded up buying the Event 20/20 passives. Got a good deal from Guitar Center. Worked out well because the same weekend I bought a used Yamaha power amp off of a friend, I think they will make a good pair. The 20/202s sound much fuller than my old Yamaha speakers, while still sounding flat in the high end. Of course it will take quick a while for my ears to get fulling tuned into them.

Thanks to eveyone as always to all the useful info, in all the various threads.
