Clip 1 is more boomy, and clip 2 is tighter (EQ alone can do that). Given this material is pretty tight it probably wants clip 1. If it was looser and deeper clip 2 might cut through better. Aside from that the bass in both takes is distant from the drums.

Rami my friend, I really like this thread as it more or less validates my core feelings on recording. Real instruments, real mics, real players trumps short cuts.

I agree. That's why I put the clips up. I WANTED Clip #1 to sound better, since I knew it was my bass drum with a mic, as opposed to a drum replacement. But I didn't want to base the decision on what I knew and I had trouble separating myself from that knowledge. So, I'm glad most people preferred the real bass drum without knowing which was which.
