Need Some Feedback

Good Stuff. I especially liked "Mezmerized". I would like to hear the vocals brought up front on most of these songs. "Mezmerized" and "Just until Autumn" came closest to having strong enough vocals. Soup up the vocals and you got a winner. This is quality stuff.

Some beautiful songs. I thought that 112 Howard Ave was great for about 2 minutes and then started to drift when the "sound-over" started.

As to the recording: I A/B'd it against an mp3.com artist whose songs I encoded that plays very similar music.
He used a pro studio with some very pricey equipment.
Your stuff stood up quite well!

OK, when you say n-track and a 57, you're leaving out a very important factor: what soundcard?
 
Good stuff, easy to listen to and enjoyable.

It sounds pretty darn clear and large. Its sounds fairly simple at first but listening closely reveals that its go some other things going on (I can't remember which songs I listened to...) and its well done.

The vocals are honest, and I know how you feel about not wanting to turn them up (been there myself) but try turning them up a bit. Leaving them low in the mix doesn't make them sound better, it makes the listener listen more closely to them because they can't make out the words. That gets frustrating after a while.

Nice recordings. I'm with the doctor: I'd like to know more about your setup and recording techniques.

ok...so I used an SM57 going to a Tascam 564 4-track as a preamp. My soundcard is just an SB Live!.

I didn't have much of a recording technique. I mean...I used a piece of single ply toilet paper as a pop filter. :) I am defiantely new to the recording world.

great name!

I really enjoyed your music... you managed to capture a lot of the nuances in your guitar and piano tracks... as well as creating a lot of "presence" and warmth.

I listened to the vocal tracks... and those appear to be the weakest area ("weakest" isn't the right word... because they aren't weak)... I think they could be more "upfront" not louder mind-you... because I believe the level for the vocal tracks is dead on.

I liked the "lo-fi" stuff better... it seemed you had more fun with those... they seemed looser and I always liked the "lo-fi" stuff... its a hell of a lot more interesting than listening to something recorded by a text book :)
 
It's hard to find fault with anything. Good songwriting will do that; it's a lot easier to look for problems in production when the songwriting just isn't there, but everything I've listened to so far has struck some emotional chord with me.

A good way for us to give more specific feedback would be to ask what your goal is... you could probably get signed to an indie label at least on the strength of this stuff, at least for a songwriting gig... I'd check out taxi.com for places to send your submissions. Also, it wouldn't hurt to start sending CDs to your local college radio stations, and giving the DJs on the alternative/indie shows a call with a heads-up.

For future reference, a piece of pantyhose works great as a pop filter.
