Need recorder with manual rec level adjustment during recording

Hi to everyone,

is there a portable unit out there that allows me to manually adjust the level during the recording ?

The Sony machines e.g. seem to lock the level once you start recording.
I know the HBB very well but need a smaller recorder.

And, if someone is so kind to supply an answer, Mic-Input and backlit display are also important.
USB support isn't really an issue (unless supported by Mac OS X or in Windows with VirtualPC).

Any ideas ?

I have a Sony WA8ESA dual deck cassette recorder and it has an automatic adjusting record input -- however, it also works as a manual setting.

It has NO mic inputs. Has the standard RCA ins/outs in the back and a plug for cans which I never use.

I sometimes use this to record stuff from my DAW Yam 2816. Most of the time, I burn the CD. But, it is a good product if this is what you are looking for.

Thanks, Green Hornet, for the reply but in this MiniDisk forum my question was actually referring to MiniDisk recorders only.

In case someone is looking for something similar:

I got the Sony MZ-N1 now as, although it's a Sony ;-) the recording level *can* be adjusted manually *during* the recording - and it works (it requires to access the menu before the recording and it resets to automatic whenever you press stop, but it seemed the best compromise).

Only drawback so far (for me): The recorder's display can't be illuminated (the remote control is backlit, though but the recording functions are the only ones that can only be accessed on the main unit ... ).

I will use the recorder as a backup device on a documentary where every single gram of weight is an issue. See how it works ...

I've put my Sony MDM-X4 up for sale (see the For-Sale section) - I think it's got what you're looking for. The input levels can be manually adjusted while recording and all the levels are the fluorescent display kind.
