I'm going out today to pick up a dynamic mic. The best thing I have is a Shure PG48, so as you can see, I need a bit of an upgrade. A local music store by me sells these Apex mics (Canadian made, so half of you might not know them, but they are here: http://www.apexelectronics.com/default.asp?p1=4&p2=0&p_id=9). They also have the usually Shures. A SM57 goes for like 148 (CND), and a dynamic mic from Apex goes for roughly 50 bucks (CND). I don't know if this is based on the fact Shure is a big name in the microphone industry, or the SM57 is simply just way better than a dynamic Apex one. Any thoughts...be so greatly appreciated...

I know that the Shure sm57 is 3 times as much. It is a standard though. Many people agree that this is a good sound and a solid performer. See if they have any of the two that you can A B against eachother. You don't want a junkie mic. You'll end up buying again if you find the Apex sound unusable. If the Apex is acceptable to you, then fine. Just my 2 cents.

Well I'll see if I can. I'm leaning towards the Shure because I know it's practically standard, has a good rep, and I know what I'd be getting. The Apex...is simply cheaper, but I don't know much about it.

they are crap, trust me, I tried that road. Get the shure, youll thank me later.

Okay, I'll take your word for it. Was it actually an Apex you used though?

I would be a little suspicious of any really cheap dynamics - go down the Shure route this time unless you can get a Sennheiser e835 for the same kinda money.

Hey Ride

Like toony said. Go to the store, and tell them you want to test them both. Play with the gain, and (if you have a singer or you are the singer) sing or whatever else you want to do.

Have anyone that you can get that's going to use the mic to come down to the store and test it. If they won't let you test it, try going to another store. When I bought my Sennheiser E835 I tested it against an SM58 and against a MXL 990. I liked the E835 for myself.
There some folks here who hate the E835, and there are others who hate the SM58. Test them and you decide what you want, since it's your money. :D

P.P.S - Sweetwater has the SM57 for $89 - $108 Canadian Free shipping!

Just FYI - I'm sure ZZounds has the same!

Does Sweetwater ship to Canada? I read through the site and didn't get a very solid answer on that one... but if they do I'm so buying from there, heh. Well, thanks everyone, I bought the SM57 today, sounds way better than my PG48 I had been using and I don't regret buying it at all!

ok, again for the record, I'd go with an apex condensor mic if you're starting out with "big" condensor mics, but for dynamic mics I don't know anything but shures (which ARE great).

However, here's a note about APEX (just like behringer): these companies, which are actually chinese knockoff companies, don't spend any money on R&D of new products. Instead what they do is take a great major name product and reverse engineer it (take it apart, make a copy). They do that very very well too. Behringer mixers sound a hell of a lot like mackies. Even the midrange dip is there. And Apex mics sound a LOT like their originals as well. The mechanical build is very good. The electronics aren't so hot though, but that can be upgraded later by a tech place (or by yourself if you're crazy into electronics). I have no issues with apex mics, in fact they're a great way to get into pro recording sound without spending much. Same goes for behringer and M-Audio. However, M-Audio doesn't copy other products, they invent their own, so for the money you spend you're getting something that's less proven.
With Apex and Behringer, what your'e getting is proven technology and design, but with cheaper electronic parts. You might find it's a speck noisier (only a tiny speck though), or slightly less warm sounding. Again, that CAN be changed later with a new transformer etc. Even new caps make a difference, but only a very small one.
