After hearing the song again with my headphones, the kick sounds much b etter than I remember. My monitors definately lack bass. Guess that's why I didn't think the kick had balls to it. The song sounds much better with the bass now. Guitars sound much fuller. I think that's pretty impressive you do it all in one take. I do my parts in different sections. Isn't that how most people do it? Not that it matters. Do whatever you like. How long have you been playing guitar for? And how old are you btw?

oh and I think the song is great. I could definately picture that song being from a big deal metal band.

I really have no idea how most bands/guitar players record their tracks. I would asume they do it in one take but I am not sure. Well, I started playing guitar about 1987 and played in a speed/thrash metal band "Deslok" in Boston, MA from about 1989 to 1990. I kept playing for a little while and then stopped for about 10 years. I just started playing again when I was doing allot more reading about home recording. So I bought a bunch of new stuff and started playing again and now recording. I am a 35 year old Metal Head!!! :D  :)

I personally lood foward to it Peter... I've listened to this track so often now I can sing along to it ;)

wow for some reason I thought you were about my age bloodsoaked. LOL. I have no idea why. Just all the older people here seem to have been recording for awhile and the people new to it are younger. Well you definately have many years more of guitar experience than me. I started playing when I was 15. I am now 21. I quit for a couple years. Then a year ago I picked it up again and played off and on. Now for the last couple months i've gotten back into it. As for the way bands usually track. It seems they do it bit by bit. I watched some kind of monster. That metallica DVD. I saw them recording and they were just doing a little section then stopped. But I think they recorded it live first. Then went over and did overdubs? I'm not sure but I think that's how bands usually do it.

It really does vary. Some bands (like the one I recorded last week) hate the track by track approach and much prefer to record as a band with little or no overdubs. The band I'm in mainly do it one track at a time but sometimes record some reference tracks first.

I read a Yes biography once and Eddy Offord used to spend hours and hours cutting 2" tape to bits, much like we cut'n'paste in our DAW's now...

so there ain't no one way... just any way you want really

I prefer to do it piece by piece cause I suck at guitar but still want my recordings to sound good lol. God damn it gets tiring tremolo picking through a 7 minute black metal song. Fuck that!

haha...I guess you don't plan on playing live. :D

I used to basically tremelo pick through an entire 45 minute set back in my gory death metal days. That's also how I got tendonitis....screw tremelo picking! :p

METALHEAD28!!!!
I have been waiting for you to comment on the song. Have you taken a listen to it lately? I would love to hear your comments.

no I don't plan on playing live seeing how this is a solo project. If I were to play live it would be with a different band. Probably not black metal seeing how no one likes it(maybe that should tell me something :p ). I just need better tremolo picking technique. I shouldn't have any pains or anything after but I do Right next to my elbow bone In that groove(haha I know I have the best terminology in such things). I need to loosen up my arm more. I've gotten a lot better at it. But I still need to practice it more.

Bloodsoaked, I saw this thread pretty late, so I didn't really hear the mix progressing. In it's current state I think it sounds good and is a kick ass song.

I can't listen that much becuase usually when I am on here (right now) I'm at work and I can't crank up the music. When I get a chance sometime today, I'll check it out more closely and maybe leave some comments that are more constructive ;)

Ericlingus, if your elbow is hurting after tremelo picking, maybe you should try to do it more from the wrist. I do it pretty much all from the wrist, only nowadays I don't tense up my arm like I used to ;) . Stay loose, and just "flutter" with your wrist.

Yeah, that would be very cool if you could take a good listen to it and give me your feedback, good or bad. Thanks.

When you guys are saying "tremelo picking" are you just talking about "speed picking"? I would like some clearification on that please. Thank you...

Yeah, I'm just talking about speed picking single notes....a la Slayer and every black metal band. :D
