Tried a search, but no luck.
First of all, please don't laugh too hard at my equipment, it was cheap, and used to sound pretty darn good, for the price. I was able to get much clearer and fuller sound than with the SM57/58 mics I have used in the past.

My equipment that I am having problems with:
Behringer Eurorack MX802A
MXL990
Decent quality balanced XLR mic cable

I hooked up and have been using the MXL 990 to my Eurorack board a couple of months ago and was actually surprised with the sound quality, it worked well.
Now, when I power up my phantom power, the red "+48V" light comes on and quickly fades off. I don't have another cable to try, but the same cable works with a Sure SM58 I have, plugged into the same port (I don't use the phantom power with this mic). I don't recall ever turning the phantom power on without having the condenser mic plugged in or ever plugging/unplugging the condenser mic with the power turned on.

Does the fact that the light comes on for a brief period of time point to any specific type of problem, other than this is all pretty cheap equipment?

Thanks in advance for any advice, I just need to know where to go from here...

Chet

Can you be more specific with what the problem is? In other words, is your complaint about the light or the mic? Does the condenser mic still work even after the light goes off or does it no longer work at all?

Hmm, two things are possible

Obviously, something is wrong with your mixer....duh

OR, you mic is not sucking out phantom power.

That is weird, but its what you get when you buy behringer. Look into a yamah mg series mixer

thanks for the quick reply

Oh, the mic doesn't work at all, not just the light. There is sound/light for a brief instant, then they both fade to no light/sound over about 2 seconds. I was able to try another mic cable with the same results.

Also, what is meant by sucking the power out of the mic? I am a total newbie.

Hi cb,

I would guess it means the Phantom Power unit in at least that channel is dead. Have you tried other mic inputs? Do they do the same?

Te phantom power on that channel has departed to recording heaven. May it rest in peace.

Wow, I cant believe i didnt think of that.

Yes, all four Mic-in ports result in the same issue. Guess I'll have to get that yamaha.

Try holding down the Phantom Power Button to see if the Phantom power stays on (and the mic works.) If it stays on while the button is held down then this tells you that the Phantom Power system is actually still working. It is likely that just the button is wearing out. That should be a cheap fix.

Good Luck.
