I would really appreciate your help with this one guys. I have just purchased a usb midisport 2 by 2. The drivers have been installed and can be seen in the midi window of the multimedia settings box. I have, I think, selected them as my output and input. However, there is still no sound when I connect my controller keyboard. The midisport shows that the keyboard is sending to it.
Can anyone help me to solve this? I am new to using the computer for midi, so I guess I'm missing something obvious.

You neglected to mention what is supposed to be making the sounds. A MIDI interface with no MIDI sound-generating device to talk to won't get you very far...

Yep, Al Chuck is right. Midi sends information to play notes, but you got to have a source that makes the sound. Maybe it's your keyboard itself that is the sound source. Simply connect the MIDI-out of your soundcard with the MIDI-in from your keyboard. When you have an external module, connect the midi out from your interface with the MIDI-in from your module.

It can't be more easy :)

Thanks for taking the time to point out my mistake.
I want to do two things. First, I would like to use my keyboard to play the synth on the soundcard inside the computer.
Second, I would like to use my Roland Soundcanvas and be able to trigger that with the midi information already programmed into my computer. I figure that if I can solve the first problem then the second will be easy to accomplish.
I don't have a midi in on my soundcard which is why I bought the USB Midisport.
Thanks again for the help.

You need to have some software to use the MIDI interface and direct its signal to and from the soundcard or in and out the ports. Do you have anything? (Usually soundcards come with something basic.)

Alchuck,
I actually managed to get the computer to drive the sound module.
I am not aware of software for the soundcard so that I can control its onboard synth. It's a crappy ess card so I am not expecting too much. However, if you can give me some hints as to where that would be in the computer I would appreciate it.
Thanks.

Try looking in the Start menu -> Programs -> Accessories -> Multimedia. Other than that, sorry, I don't know what might be there.

Just about any music recording/sequencing software would allow you to do this. I'm sure there's some freeware out there, and the cheapest product I know of offhand is PG Music's PowerTracks Pro Audio ($29) -- http://www.pgmusic.com/powertracks.htm
Cakewalk, Cubase, Logic et. al. all have some "lite" versions of their stuff that's typically between $50-100.

Trust me, though, the MIDI synth on the ESS card/chip is not worth hearing if you have a decent external module. :)

Thanks for the help. I managed to figure it out. It was really simple. All I had to do was change the midi output of my multitracking software. Thanks again for the tips.
