to all the tech - guys out there ??
can anybody help me ??
i recently purchased a
sennheiser mkh 406 p 48 mic,
which is said to be kinda neumann km 184, but even a bit smoother.
it´s running with phantom power as it´s the p48 version.
the connector is a 3-pin din type.
now what happened:
i used a din to xlr cable to test the mic and everything was running fine.
since that cable wasn´t mine, i bought the connectors and a cable today and i soldered my own din to xlr cable. not knowing, that you have to connect the weirs to different pins on the din connector, i made a mistake and connected all weirs to the same pins as on the xlr connector (1 - ground, 2 hot, 3 cold). unfortunately after that i looked up on the net, that the ground is on pin 2 at din connectors, 1 is hot, 3 is cold.
i run a test on the mic and i´m afraid i damaged it, sending the 48v to the wrong pin. now there´s almost no output on the mic.
does anyone have experience with that ?? can anyone tell me, if i damaged the mic (which i´m pretty sure of, but i don´t know how big the damage is) ... i´d love to use the mic, i´m so stupid i didn´t look up the pin connection before i finshed the cable and started the mic ...

i´d be greatful for any statements or any propositions ...

regards,
micha

by the way, three days ago i broke off the release button of my
bss drp-402 compressor ...
i´m destroying all my equipment these days, what a ****

Well running +48v through pin 1 (ground) can cause a bunch of different problems depending on the type of Curcuitry it has....If you can get a schematic of the mic it would sure help diagnose what components could have been dammaged....

I would say definate posibilities would be any Polarized Capacitors ,Polarized capacitors (Electrolytic, tantilum) do not like to be reverce Biased and any Tantimul caps would surely be dammaged and any electrolytics could be dammaged depending on how long they were reverce Biased (I had a Cap exlpolde on me last night in about 10 seconds with only 15v)...
Any Bipolar transistors could also be dammaged....

I suggest you take it to someone who knows how to fix Mics unless you have an electrical aptitude and can open it up yourself and trouble shoot any problems....

Good luck

thanks a lot for your comment,
i guess, i´m not able to do anything by myself in this case.
luckily i´ve a friend who´s good in this field, i hope he can help me up.

what came to my mind:
in order to "clean" the capsule, i blew 2-3 times on it (with the grill unmounted), because i saw few dust particles ...

could i have damaged the capsule that way ??

now, looking back, i wonder why i did all that. since my friend, who´s gonna try to repair the mic is always taking care of my stuff ...
i guess, i did not have enough patience ... stupid.

anyway:
1000 thanks for your post, i´ll reach it on to my friend.
bye,
micha
