I just bought a house (Escrow started yesterday) and the garage is detached. It measures 14' x 20'. I've been searching high and low for studios around that size and shape to get (er' steal) ideas from. Anyone here have a studio with those measurements? Or maybe ideas? My budget is healthy but not overly healthy! I'll post some pics of my garage and my potential plans soon.
Thanks,
RF

Rushfan,

Here you can check out what I'm doing. Mine is an attached garage. measurements are 11 X 20. I have a weird shaped garage, kind of a 1 1/2 car size. I'll post some more pics soon.

John- Thanks for the link....that'll keep me occupied for a while!

Gatorhaus- That looks bigger than 11 x 20. It appears to be wider. Nice job so far. I've been doing all my plans on Microsoft Excel.

What's a cheap program that I can use to make the drawings so I can post them here?
Thanks,
RF

Oh yeah.... gatorhaus- No offense but when I first saw your picture, I thought it was Beau Bridges!:D

nice work larry

how did you go about doing the ceiling.
If my studio works out I will need to build mine like you have.

also what sort of sound reduction are you getting from one room to the next?

Ceiling, I basically ran joist/rafters (not sure what they're called) across the top after I put the four framed walls together.

The bottom piece is my top plate of each wall, I then put two caps on to put the walls together overlapping each of them.

It is wider, but I had roughly 11 X 20 to work with. I am making two rooms. Both rooms are free standing boxes that are floating and completly isolated from each other. One will be a drum room 11 X 10. and the other is a vocal/iso room 6 X 9. The rest of the garage will be the control room. I am also building isolation boxes for guitar amps. Basicall a sound proof box the size of a guitar amp, probably a marshall half-stack size.

notice the last rafter is flush with the cap,
this allows the particle board to be nailed flush to the wall.

Hope this helps,

Thanks larry

you seem to be doing what I will need to do.

What are you doing to float and completly isolated your rooms.
I can't seem to find how to best do this to mine.

When I raised my walls I put a thick rubber strip under each bottom plate on the concrete. I also made sure that when I was attaching the particle board and dry wall, it didn't touch the floor. I left about a 1/2" gap from the concrete. CAULK, CAULK, CAULK. Invest in a nice caulk gun (only $9-13) and plan on using a bunch of caulk, I have gone through more silicone-latex than a baywatch episode, (lol, I couldn't resist). Really I have used probably 60-75 of the small tubes, and at $1.27 (or near) it adds up.
