Hi Forum :)

I am newer than new to recording, but took it upon myself to buy some equipment. However I have now clue how to hook it up. :( That's where you come in :)))

I have:
TLM 103 Neumann Mic
(1) monster cable
DBX 386 Dual vacuum Tube preamp w/ Digital output
M-Audio Fast Track Pro (No power chord or cables)???
M-Audio Live Lite 6 CD
(2) Event Electronics ALP Bi amplified Direct Field Monitor System Speakers (Power Chords Only)

I plan to use Adobe: Cool Edit Pro Recording Software-as I have some basic familiarity with it.

Please let me know what I need to do, buy, in order to hook it up and start recording.
Any and all help is sincerely appreciated. Thank you

The link jonny put is pretty comprehensive, but just to add some bits to the list of gear you've got that you may need;

An SPDIF cable to connect the SPDIF output on the DBX to the SPDIF input in the Fast Track Pro

A USB cable to connect the Fast Track Pro to your computer (if you've not already got one). the fast track can run off of USB bus power so you don't need a separate power cable unless the USB bus power isn't enough (it should be fine)

Two TRS cables (or TRS to Male XLR) to connect the Fast Track Pro to the Monitors

Also, although not directly connection based, if you've not got them already;

a mic stand
a pop shield
speaker stands
Heaphones for monitoring whilst recording

Thank you both! I am off to buy (2) TRS Cables & (1) S/PDIF Cable. Not sure that you will get back to me in time, but any recommendations? Type, model, brand, on line, in store, price range?

Thanks again, your input is greatly appreciated.

Cool, glad it helped :)

cable brands etc aren't my forté but as a rule of thumb is does seem that you get what you pay for with cables. also, make sure the SPDIF is right the type of cable as there's a couple of digital connections. from what i can see it's this type (i think it's coaxial). either way it looks like a standard phono/RCA connecter but SPDIF

Actually, just checked, it is coaxial according to the fast track specs

Thanks for that insight! I went ahead and got the cables. Cost me around $40 for the (3)
Live Wire CSS-115 Balanced (TRS) 1/4" Cable (2) & Live Wire DRA-503 S/PDIF Digital Audio Cable RCA (M) to Same.

I have the TRS cable running from the monitors into the Fast Track Pro Outputs. & the S/PDIF running from DBX Preamp Out to Fast Track Pro In. Everything is plugged in and my mic is plugged into the Fast Track Pro Mic/Inst 1.

No I am attempting to install the M-Audio CD. I just need to get a recording program. I am thinking Adobe Cool Edit Pro???

Thanks again.

Cool, once you're all set up and running try plugging the mic into the dbx instead of straight into the fast track to
1) check that it works (it should show up as an input in cool edit as something like spdif in or digital in or something) and
2) it may sound nicer than the built in pre in the fast track

You may also need to download the latest drivers for the maudio fast track. just google "fast track pro drivers" and find the most up to date one for your operating system :)
