Hi,

Looking forward to hear feedback for my mix of this cover of a fusion rock song:

[MP3]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/12709731/Lagow/Omens%20of%20Love.mp3[/MP3]

Still learning to mess around with so many things in the mix, my goal was to have the lead guitar as the main theme while the main rhythm should come from bass and crunch guitar, everything else was supposed to complement and enhance the overall sound with the exception of a few brass and pad leads.

Thank you in advance for your feedback and I hope you enjoy this song.

Rhythm guitar sounds...weird. Too bassy and slightly muffled maybe? And the drums are too echoy and distant. The snare sounds like it is fighting against a limiter. The lead lines and everything else sounds pretty cool. It is definitely good playing and well recorded.

Jguitar_tm, thanks for the input! For the rhythm guitar, will a slight boost on the treble area make it sound less muffled?
Will also try to reduce the reverb on the drums and try to reduce the compression on snare as well. Really appreciate the feedback, thank you! Any more feedback, criticism and input are very welcomed and appreciated :)

Slight boost in the treble area seems like it would be worth a shot, yes. It's not unbearable once the other stuff comes in. Just a little off-putting in the beginning.

Thanks, will do that later tonight and see how it goes. I too also begin to feel that the rhythm guitar is muddy now that I listened to the track just now! I guess my ears were just get used to the sound because I listened to it nonstop yesterday haha..

I think jguitar_tm has given you some good input on the mix, so let me just comment on the tune--great stuff! I love the high energy, and the big, joyful melody of the lead. I'd buy a CD of this stuff and move it to the top of my rotation. Nice work...

I thought the song was well put together and well played.

Has a bit of a 70s prog rock song. Agree the rhythm guitars were a bit muffled. Lead guitar is as well, tho to a lesser extent.

There were some bells/chimes/whatever in a few brief spots. But they were tough to hear. I'd bring those up.

WhiteStrat, thank you for the compliment :) really means a lot to me!

TripleM, thank you! I will work on the rhythm guitar sound again soon. Yes, I also agree about the bells, thanks for pointing that TripleM. Will work on it too :)

By the way if anyone don't mind answering, did you noticed that the drum is programmed? Does the drum sound real enough for you or is it still too artificial? Thank you in advance :)

Mix has some bass issues. Re-Check your HPFs and bass eq.

Sounds a lot like an early 80s TV show theme, very cool I like it!

Good work, few things need to be looked at, otherwise fun track!

I could tell they aren't real, but they still sounded pretty good. You could probably trick an average listener.

PDP, thank you for the feedback. If I may know what's the exact issue with the bass? Is it too boomy? I highpass around 70Hz for the bass, hopefully that is not too low for this kind of song?

Jguitar_tm, thanks! I really wish someday I can have someone to play a real drum set and mic'ed it properly in a good room so I can focus more on the guitar, bass, keys and mixing haha!

!

I thought the mix overall was a bit bassy but I couldn't put my finger on it. So I meant just check that all the instruments have enough HPF on them. In one or two spots the bass itself did seem to jump out in a boomy way, the bass may need a small cut around 2-300hz, rather than just the HPF. Sorry for the confusion and really these are rather nit picky things not like it sounded way off, just a little.

Yes I did. And I'm usually not very good at that sort of thing. I can be fooled pretty easily. So that tells me a little practice at that sort of thing would help.

PDP no need to sorry man, and thanks a lot for clarifying! I just found out that my HPF for the rest of the instruments are a bit too low, so I guess you're right!
TripleM, thanks for being honest, I am using Hydrogen and to be honest I haven't event scratched the surface. Do you think "more randomized pitch" on the drum parts will help to make it sound real?

Aside from the mix "problems" already mentioned here, I liked the song. Interesting melodies. Great 80s vibe!

cheers

Very cool! I enjoyed listening to this.
It sounded good to me when it got to the main part. My feedback is on the intro. It seemed "off" like it would sound better if it was quantized. Things didn't seem to come in on time/at the same time. Also, when it starts, it should really START. It sort of mealy-mouths into existence. But all that is just on the intro. Like I said, the main part of it sounded terrific.
The drums seem to fit with the rest. Didn't bother me. (Then again, I don't use real drums either.)

Hugo Ribeiro, thank you for the compliment, glad that you enjoyed the song :)

Jessica X, yes I agree about the intro and thank you for your feedback on that! Glad you liked the song :)
