Prepare for a miracle. My garage studio/office/library/toolshed generates dust so fast, I can watch my computer screen turn gray in real time. Annoying and not healthy for lungs, computers, condensors, etc.
I was just about to spring hundreds of bucks on an electrostatic air filter when my handy-man big brother saved me. Here's the amazingly effective and cheap solution.
Get a basic 20-inch box fan ($11 Walmart). Then get a 20-inch, 1-micron-rated furnace filter ($8 Walmart). Tape the filter to the back of the fan. Voilá!!! Set it anywhere in the room. I run it at night and/or when I'm not tracking or mixing. After just one day the dust became negligible. The filter still works fine after a couple months of regular use.
In a burst of value-added cleverness, and to avoid unnecessary thinking, I added a plug-in timer ($4 on clearance at Walmart) so the fan goes on automatically when I'm gone.
One more benefit. Using the Arm&Hammer brand filter brings spring-like freshness to my garage. Like I said, it's a miracle.
