Heya guys,

First off, let me thank you in advance for reading his post and perhaps offering me some advice.

A few friends and I want to create a bare-bones audio production set up. Basically, we want to create tracks to rhyme to. We figured that if we use our computers with this setup, it could save us a lot of money, but we realize that everything involved in this process cannot be done on a computer (well maybe it can, but it'd probably give us a lot of headaches). We don't have much experience with druming, so it was recommended to me that a drum machine would be a suitable alternative. I've reviewed some of the more prominent drum machines sold online, and it looks to me that a 300 or 400 dollar budget would be fine.

However, I'm unsure if more equipment is needed. Ultimately, we want to make the beat tracks separately, then import them onto the computer. We'd do the same with the vocals, they'd be recorded separately and then fused with the track through a program, maybe something like Acid or Cakewalk.

Would I need more equipment like a sequencer or a sampler? I'm unfamiliar with the interplay of these tools, and figured I'd better get some knowledge and advice before I start spending money.

Thanks again.

You definatly can do most things with in the "Box" of your PC.
First off, what is the specs of you machine or machines?

I use Propellerheads Reason 3.0 for making beats and doing synth parts.
I have used it with Cakewalk Sonar.
Reason is basicly your synths and drum machine and a sequencer and Sonar is Audio recording and editing and sequencer program.

This stuff and a Soundcard(quality not consumer but pro). A small mixer and a good mic or two and some headphones and maybe some studio monitors(speakers) are a good bet for your needs.

Reason 3.0 costs around $400 and Sonar comes in diferent versions from $100-600.
A basic but good sound card will set you back around $100-150 just for a bsic two chanel model that is.
Mixer is around $60 on up. A condesor mic is around $100 on up some are less.
And monitors are ok around $300 and up.
Just to give you some basic ideas.

Just some thought to concider.
