Need a recommendation for external sound card.

Here is my situation: I am looking for an external sound card to do some remote recordings and transfers of tape onto hard drive. Most of the consumer products are bothersome because they are all "5.1 Extreme Surround Theater" or whatever and all I need is a clear stereo sound, but most of the proaudio gear is out of my price range ($100, I know I'm cheap).

The sound card on my laptop is a little too noisy for me. I am not doing pro recording, I have a guy who does anything serious for me. But I do need to make some high quality transfers onto hard drive to give to him. Field recording, tape loops, etc... I need to transfer and edit this stuff a little before passing it on to my producer.

So my needs are, $100 preferably less, and very little loss in quality. USB or PCMCIA. Somewhat small and portable. If I could get one that had two stereo inputs, I would be ecstatic. Any recommendations?

The only one I have found that looks like it is a safe bet and is still in my price range is this m-audio device: M Audio

Thanks in advance.

Thanks, I took the suggestion and got the behringer uca202. We'll see how it goes.

That guide is really cool. I will read some more and hopefully get a good start on home recording in the future.

Thanks a bunch.

I'm also looking at getting a portable, stand-alone recording unit. Something that I can always have with me and do some field recording. Right now, the Zoom H4 looks like the best one with its stereo mic formation and 4 track capabilities. Anyone tried that unit or something similar?
