MSR-16 on the way. Only dealt with a 488MKII so far. What do I need for a board? Any suggestions on connections needed. Tried "Other Equipment" forum but no concrete answers on what the physical requirements may be, as I have only dealt thus far with a 488 which does everything (monitoring/recording/etc) for you with the push of a couple of buttons. I will record (for the time being) max 2 tracks at a time, have a Joe Meek pre, need something to handle 16 mixdown and maybe four input. Requesting help. :) :)

It would work with an MSR-16 and with the situation I described? If so, how much they goin' for these days?

The M520 would be ideal for a 16-track.

Haven't seen an M520 or M2516 on ebay. Any better suggestions for places to purchase such gear? I did see an M2524, 24 track version of the 2516 I assume, listed. A ten-hour round trip to Tampa, but at least I could pick it up in person. $499 buy it now, $199 start...may go for $300, not sure. I think it has the "flip" inline monitoring, too, which I am just understanding may be very desirable for my connectivity to 16 track recorder. Any thoughts?

I got a 2524. It's da bees knees.

You'll need a patchbay too, or well, a whole bunch of them ;), to patch between the outs of the mixer and ins of the TSR. (unless you can find a cheap 16-bus mixer... Ha!)

Yeah, the flip in-line is good in this case. You can have the tapes on the tape-ins of channel 1-16 monitor when tracking, and then just push a button (per track) to get into the main channel strip, with the filters.

This weekend I did an A/B recording of a guitar with the Tascam preamps and a $300 preamp, and both are clear and nice, and almost impossible to tell any difference between at all. The M2524 has 24 of them. Thats some $3k worth just in preamps. :D

An Allen & Heath GS3 will kick any Trashcam mixer' s ass all day long.

It has better pre-amps, is not thing sounding and has great summing amps.

Look and listen. The finest mixer that ever was for the $$$.

Thanks all for the great advice, but the budget went up after some searching and went for a Mackie 24 ch 8 bus for about just under $800. It was local too...big plus I feel. Hmmm...gotta learn how to work it now, especially when the MSR gets here.
Thanks again for all the great advice!

Actually $761, no shipping as was a local pickup. Came with the original box, styrofoam bracing, ps of course, manuals...I feel really good about this one. The MSR was SMOKY, but cosmetically good condition other than that. She got a good exterior cleaning, heads and rollers with the solution I used on my 488MKII, soap and warm water on a towel for the exterior metal casing. Pinch roller seems a bit sticky to the touch. Now I need to get some wiring to mate the two together so I can see what I have to deal with. Mackie has 1/4 in/outs and MSR is all RCA in/outs. Way I figure I need two 16 ch. 1/4"-RCA snakes. Been looking at Horizon at MF for $169, Rapco with switchcraft jacks (24ch on ebay) for $150, or ProCo for somewhere in the same area, maybe more for their fancy series. I'm assuming you guys would roast me at this point if I mentioned something like Hosa or Pulsar, so I'll just suck it up, not mention those brands and ask for a little advice if you have it, and would be so kind as to share it. Any place better or cheaper I could be looking besides ebay and online music stores? Any opinions on Horizon, Rapco, or ProCo cabling/snakes? Also looking at Mogami, but don't know if the offer a 1/4"-RCA snake. Or maybe I should get 1/4-1/4 and buy 1/4 to RCA adapters for the MSR side. Hmmm...
Thanks again.

heh heh ... that's a hidden cost of analog pleasures :p
First of all, I personally would not roast'Ya for using hosa cables. I'd say, there's nothing wrong with them, they are just sh*ttier than some other brands and a bit less reliable in tough applications/situations, where every move counts, like during live show/recording etc...., that's why pros don't count on them.
Me myself one day went to local music gear store and went out like a cowboy with a large roll of good quality 'raw' cable over my shoulder and a bag of bunch of rca(s), 1/4"(s) and XLRs.... so since then I mostly make my own cables, but it is a pain in tha' A*s to do, unless you may enjoy the process. The best part of it, thou is that you make exactly what you need (no more no less) with 0% waste :p

Also if you have time and patience, then surf the e-bay for a while, you may hit couple of lot-boxes with bunch of snakes and cables for relatively next-to-nothing.

Hi, like Dr Zee I make my own leads but that's not for everyone. If you do, remember that some connectors are better than others; I used to use ones from Dick Smith and they work ok, until you need to re-use them in which case the guts would melt and the whole thing go intermittent.

Proel have some reasonable stuff, but I don't know how common it is over there. I have most recently used Proel 1/4" jacks (P210 and P215 for TS and TRS from memory) and RCA connectors and they seem quite well made, and at least can handle being soldered multiple times.

They have a range of snakes etc as well which from all counts are quite well made, depending on the 'series' you buy, so if you're not handy with a soldering iron you've still got some options.

Yeah, if you may be thinking of making cables, then watch out for some bad jack, connectors... etc. Well, overall, if you don't go to RadioShack but go to any music gear/instruments store... you are pretty safe ;) (RadioShack, btw, does have bunch of usefull stuff.... but, no good for connectors .... that was tested, take my word on it...heh heh )

I personally happend to buy and used and was very happy with Pro Co cables and parts (or you can search for ProCo ...as one word)
here's parts catalog link: http://www.procosound.com/downloads/ProCo_bulkparts.pdf

I have madebunch of cables using DynaMike 224s (for stereo, bal, send-return cables) and MusicMover 120s1 for mono/unbal cables, also can be used for instrument and guitars.
I also am pretty sure that I used their ProCo 1/4" mono(s) and stereo(s) plugs...they are great, but I don't remeber what brand RCA plugs I had .... some all-metal handle type. I also have bunch of cheaper plastic RCA plugs... they are okey too for general use, but yeah, they are harder to solder, cos are melting etc and are kinda ...hmmmm cheezy... but it's duable as well, just pain in the neck :p

I need to get this rig up an running, so I'll have to pass on making my own for now. Maybe in the future, but I need turnkey right now. ProCo...always loved their Rats, cable ends are metal not plastic. Any thoughts on Horizon? Not sure what brand of connectors Horizon uses, but they are not plastic. Hosa just has those damned plastic connectors that don't seem like they want me to own them....

Did a quick search for proel snakes and didn't find much...found a lot of stands, but no snakes. :( This pic is of a Rapco 24 ch. with Switchcraft connectors, 15'. Leaning toward this x2, if the guy will call me back, or ProCo.

Pinch Rollers

You said,

in one of your posts. Have you replaced that yet? Sticky means somehone put the wrong cleaner on the Pinch Rollers.

Is it possible to get a copy of the manual from you somehow?

I know the posts are a little dated, but am looking for parts and manuals for two of my reproducers and board.

yeah sticky pinch roller = don't run any tape.

replace that thing immediately.

also 25' is a bit long for unbalanced snake. try to get 15' or less.
