Normalize is usually an offline process, not a plugin. I'm sure your software has it built in. Unless you are using it for the final stage of mastering, there is no reason to use it.

Oh hell yeah, John. After I'm done with a mix, it sounds so off I apply the "normalize" function and it makes the listening experience survivable!

I still normalize. It's just too hard to get closer than half a dB or so with compressors, faders, etc.

I like to get that very last 1/20th of a bit of precision.
