What are the "best" nearfield studio monitors out there?

-and-

What are the "best" priced nearfield studo monitors?

Help me out here, I'm po'.

Thanx

There's no such thing as "the best" ---

Some regard these quite highly - while the Yorkville YSM-1s give you a lot of bang for the buck........

?Passive and Powered?

What is the difference between Passive and Powered monitors?

Yes, I'm ignernt...

Passive monitors require a power amp - powered monitors are self-amplified (ie, no external power amp is used)

Powered have built in amps and are also generally bi-amped with an active crossover. For serious monitoring active should be used.

ADAS5AP$7,700.00, 2/$15,400.00

Are they out of their friggin minds? There is no speaker in the world worth that much except for a dumbass with too much money.

It depends on your scale, DJC.

If you're a hobyist recording stuff for your mom and/or your girlfriend . . . or a semi-pro doing stuff to get gigs at local clubs, then 7 grand would be a pretty big waste for a set of monitors.

If, however, you just got contracted to master the latest M&M record, or a blockbuster Disney Film Score . . . $7 grand might just be considered chump change.

Yea, it's all relative.

I fall somewhere in between the "recording for your mom and girlfriend", and "seeking dominion over the world" categories.

I think maybe the yorkville may be closer to my price range, though I can't be sure because I haven't found a price on them yet...

My cats really like my music too...

It's a shame their web site has such obnoxious colors; makes me think they're not very professional....

I've gone to 8thstreet.com and midiaudio.com and can't find the YSM-1s. Where are they offered for a good price?

You're kidding, right?

Have you not heard of Fletcher?? He's one of the buyers for Mercenary - and pretty much an industry heavyweight.

No, I'm not kidding.

Don't get me wrong, I know what the business is, what they sell, and how big they are. I just don't like their web site colors. It hurts my eyes. Just because a place is big and does a lot of business and very professional doesn't mean they can't have a crappy website.

Screw the website, where can you get the yorkvilles ysms at the best price????????

"Best" ,yes I know.

How about there?

I got mine at L&M Toronto (If you know the store then I know, I overpaid ;), it was still more than worth it)

About the YSM1p. I went to the L&M studio with a budget of nearly $2000 US for monitors, more if necessary. After being in a room filled with Genelecs, Mackies, Events, Tannoys and other assorted low-end and ultra-highend monitors, it was no more than 30 minutes before I undoubtedly made up my mind on the YSMs. They don't deserve to be compaired along equally priced monitors like many compare them to, they stood out above the Event 20/20s and any other monitor around that and double the price. Even the quadruple priced highly acclaimed Mackie HR824s seemed to stand in it's shadow. I haven't had enough experience with the HR824s to make a solid judgement but the transient response seemed somewhat slow. Anyways, whatever you take them for, you're going to like them very much. Everyone that has them does.

BTW, I'm referring to the powered YSM1p. The passive options will obviously not meet the same standards, however may come comparably close, I have not heard them.

The Adams are Mid to Far field monitors so they are going to be more expensive. They have to handle more power and they have more speakers. Ribbon tweeters are typically more expensive to build than dome tweeters as well. One you get to the level where you need the Adams... your not really paying for them...write them off as business expense.

Any homerecordist that spends this kinda money is either too rich or a working pro in the likes of Steve Vai's Mothership.

SoMm
