Near Field Monitors for tracking?

I'll be there
I was wondering if I could track my 50 w combo against a pair of monitors. Right now I'm using an old fubarred 200 w stereo into some cheapy radio scrap speakers. It doesn't work too bad but the amp has been toast for a long time and the sound isn't great. The biggest problem I have is doing some takes and then carting my system back to my computer desk only to find that the guitar was recorded to thin or too fat etc...after it sounded fine in my "studio". The system just doesn't have the required clarity.

Solution
Buy a pair of 50watt near field monitors with built in amps and use them for monitors while I'm laying down guitar tracks (this is all sequenced rythm btw).

Will they have the beef to take on my 50w tube amp? I like playing loud, but not that loud. Is this a real bad idea for some reason I'm not aware of?

Thanks

Doug

why would you want to monitor through speakers while playing? that will get picked up by the mic. get some headphones for tracking.

Because I like playing without wearing a set of headphones. I'm not currently in a band or anything so this is my jam time. I'm don't mind a little bleed on the guit track, and I'm going to build an insulated "canopy" to shield the mic a little morem and me from the amp at the same time. I'm just wondering if a set of 50 w monitors could compete with my amp at a reasonable level. Also, the term "near field" makes me wonder if they would be uselss for anything other tnan 3 feet from my ears.

i don't think you'd get a good recording, but if its just to play around and see how you sound thats cool i guess.

Especially if you did that for every track in a whole mix.

People say the slight colours that some preamps add can build up in mixes. So if the preamps was a bit boxy in the mids, and you used it for 20 tracks, you'd have some problems with those boxy mids.

Imagine if you were rerecording everything all those times, i think the world would explode.

whatever floats your boat man. i love wearing a nice set of phones. what is it that you don't like? not talking earbud here, i'm talking huge cushiony beasts :D
