Hi,

I've got a male lead vocal that is sounding nasal. Any suggestions on how to fix it? (besides the *right* way, re-recording... :) )

Thanks,
-lee-

Please pardon my ignorance...

How tight of a Q should I have on my filter? Is it a broader type of thing, or more of a notch?

How much of a cut should I try to start? about 3-6 dB?

Thanks,
-lee-

I've been doing some recordings of a guy with a very nasally voice and the MXL v93 sounds awesome on him.

Use a notch or else you might collapse the body section of the vocals. You need to be gentle with Vocals even more so as any "overdown" change will stick out like a thorn. And the most problimatic changes are in the mids......

First boost then cut as needed. Make sure you have the right freq first. Just use your ears.

Well, if re-recording weren't out, here is a different perspective on how to fix it...

Have the vocalist imitate Yogi Bear for a day or two. Not kidding. This is termed a "low larynx" exercise. It lowers the adam's apple (and thus voicebox) in the throat so air doesn't travel as much into the nasal cavity. It takes practice and a lot of concentration, but eventually you can train your throat muscles to relax and not push the adam's apple up -- especially when going for the high notes. Tell him to concentrate on singing with the throat more open, instead of trying to (as it were) "sing through a pinhole."

The opposite sound from the Yogi Bear "heyyyy BOO BOO" thing is a totally Jerry Lewis "hey nice LADY!!!" nasal sound, with the larynx high.

This would be more of a long-term fix, for those so inclined  HTH someone.
