That's what I meant. The style is subjective, I quite like it. The sound at the moment is too up-front ... it sounds like a vocal laid over a backing track (much like Joss Stone's first album where they are so desperate to showcase the singing that the mix ends up totally wrong).grn said:

once again, noisedude is correct... that's how the vocals were laid down. we did our instruments first, then I laid vocals down on top of the backing track created from that. I believe we did a better job this time around.
on the last CD there is so many things I could now go back and fix, but I'm sure everyone could do that with their first albums. actually there is a lot I could go back and fix (I'd turn my distortion WAY down and make sure I got the exact sounds I wanted). however, I have learned a lot more - thanks to these boards and people like noisedude!

thanks lasagne (don't give away one of your kids, more often than not I can't stand my voice!). you've got a good set of ears noisedude. I'm not sure how this turned in to a thread about my voice, but at least it was productive. 
one thing this board makes me painfully aware of is that I am a musician and a songwriter and not a recording engineer. many people on this board are right in between being the musician and the recording engineer. often times people start out as a musician and later find out they are really supposed to record other people. I know my role is definitely a musician/performer and not running a professional studio. so hopefully I can start making enough money to pay other people to record us properly.

I'm just coming back to being a musician a bit more after dipping my toes more and more over the last couple of years. I'm around guitars all day and that has helped me get away from plugins and forums and back to practising and gigging. But I will still take time at points in the future to improve what I can do because it's a good way to earn a little extra spending money and meet other musicians.

Vocal coaching wont make you sound like an opera singer unless you want to be. As I said, you're voice is unique and I get what you're doing with it on your songs. You don't need to change your voice, just use it better. You have some problems with a few note changes and that's where you're getting off key. Then again, singers can do accidentals too.
BTW, are you doing ANY vocal exercises?

no, I guess I could - back when I did theater I did warm up exercises... I think a few off notes are ok I suppose, look at bob dylan. but there is always room for improvement. I don't want it to be perfect (so no autotune), I want it to be human.
