What do you think of my website? Just finished the design. I did one like this awhile ago but formatted and lost everything so I had to start over.

This time I did it right though, using minimal HTML and CSS to style everything (what a bitch!). And made sure it validates.

Anyway, I just have the front page done so far and a blog which reads from a database.

I won't be getting a domain until it's finished, so for now I have to host it on my computer (if it doesn't work then try again later cause my computer is probably off ;)).

Anyway, I just want some opinions on the design/theme/layout, etc. I'll post again once everything is on there:

Thanks.

2nd update:

Main page, music page, newsletter, and contact page are working, tell me what you think. (Also try signing up with the newsletter and/or removing your e-mail from the newsletter).

Also removed the banner from the top (thanks mjr).

Hey -

Hit me up via PM if you want me to host it for you. It's the least I can do for you after all your help. I can give you a subdomain now, but if you register a domain, I can give you a full account.

Wow, that'd be awesome. Getting the domain would be no problem, I'll do that once the site is finished (shouldn't take too long). So I'll let ya know then.

I don't suspect it will use a lot of bandwidth since not many people will visit and I will only have some MP3s on there.

Anyway, thanks I really appreciate that.

Nothing less than I expected from someone who knows their stuff! Cool site man, and thanks for all your help with my questions.

Thanks, Tele. Still a little new to CSS and stuff but I'm learning that as I go.

No problem. :p

Nice site Danny!
Don't spoil it in the future by making it more exiting.
I am the one who finds beauty in simplicity.

I tried to make my own site as well but I have to admit your is much better.
http://home.online.no/~eldg/index.cfm

The thing is that I know nothing about web design so I chose one preset in one stupid web site generator and added few pictures, mp3s and links.
My internet supplier has announced that uploading of mp3s was not possible but I made it somehow.

Thanks sikter. I also appreciate simplicity. ;)

I just started on the music page (should work if you click the music link at the top). Still haven't put any MP3s up yet but I think the page is looking nice so far.

My friend told me it looked good but to make it less "un-interesting". :p

He didn't really elaborate on that too much so I'm starting to worry it might be too boring looking, or maybe he said that cause there's nothing on there yet, I don't know.

Either way, I like this simple design so I'm gonna stick with it.

I think I'd make the Danny Guitar just a bit darker. Do the same with the rollovers. They're fine, but when you put the mouse over them, make the text darker instead of lighter.

Outside of that, it's looking good.

Thanks, mrj. I might do what you said about the links/logo. Not sure yet.

I put some MP3s on the site. Got it setup so I can just add it into the database and it will display them on the site. :D

Too bad the music on there sucks. I really need to write some good songs now. I used to have a bunch but I lost them all. :( They're backed up on DVDs somewhere but I really don't feel like sorting through them all.

Been thinking about this. What your friend probably means is that the site has almost a "corporate" or a "business" feel to it.

I do, however, like the simple elegance you have going on. Your site is straightforward, I can tell it's a music site from the guitar graphic. The one piece of cautionary advice I'd give, though, would be to not get too crazy with the banner ads & Google ads. Your site is clean as it is. Banner ads & Google ads may clutter it up some.

I know what you mean about the 'business' feel to it. I was thinking that myself. Maybe I'll work on another design, I'm not sure. But I like the clean/simpleness it has now. The few websites I've designed in the past were all business/corporate sites so maybe that's why. :D

Yea I almost don't feel right putting ads on there at all but it will help me pay for the site and whatnot. Although NL5 has offered me hosting once I get a domain name.

I might just keep the text ads and remove the banner completely.

Thanks for the feedback mrj. I'm gonna work on it some more today.

How much are you paying for hosting? There are several companies out there that will give you hosting for under $10 a month. If you're doing PHP, I've heard good things about PowWeb (http://www.powweb.com). One of their packages averages out to about $7.77 per month. you get 300 Gigs of storage space, and 3,000 gigs per month of data transfer.

Here's a list of some of the other features:

http://www.powweb.com/powweb/hosting.bml

I go with Brinkster right now, primarily because my site is in classic ASP, but as soon as I get the time to switch it over to PHP (and when my CD is finished) I'm probably going to go with PowWeb also.

The only thing I don't like about them is they want you to pay a year at a time. Brinkster lets me do it monthly.

Not paying anything right now cause I have it running from this computer. I installed PHP/MySQL, and Apache so I could create the site/test it before uploading it to my domain (when I get one).

I downloaded XAMPP which is a free package that installs all that PHP, MySQL, Apache, FTP, etc. stuff for you.

If NL5 will host the site that will be great, don't have to worry about it. :D I've used GoDaddy in the past and they were very good.

Never heard of PowWeb.

Great site Danny. I like it. I'm still using Godaddy and they still are great. 300gb for $7.77 isn't bad hmmm... going to go check em out now.

Thanks, Mindset.

If NL5 didn't offer the hosting GoDaddy is where I'd go. Great prices and really good customer service.

Check this out

http://dannyguitar.servehttp.com

Click the 'listen now!' link to the right (it opens up another window with a flash player). Customized the thing myself. TOOK FOREVER.

Anyway, couldn't get the volume/seek parts to look right, but I'll have to do that later.
