My Stupid Question

I am an amateur/hobby songwriter, and seem to be having some challenges with my set up at home.

Here's what I am working with:

Windows XP
Pentium 4 processor
1 GB RAM
Tascam US-122 USB Midi/Audio Interface
Integrated Intel soundcard
Cubase SX 3.0
Midi Keyboard
Various audio in

What I am trying to do I record Midi and audio tracks seperately.

My 'Midi out' is currently the Windows Wavetable, which results in serious latency.

I am thinking that adding a PCI sound card with midi inputs and integrated synth is the answer, but don't want to throw money away.

Any feedback, including sound card reccomendations (under $300) if required would be appreciated.

Before you shell out the money on a different soundcard to alleviate your MIDI latency from the MS wavetable softsynth, you may want to research the use of VSTi's and various soundfonts/samples.
