I see lots of others taking a shot at covers their favorite bands. Here is my take on Dream Theater. This is about a year old. I am interested in what you think is right with it. I know the drums are stiff. I programmed them because the parts are just too dang hard. Everything else I played and sang. I know there are problems technically too but just looking for mix ideas and what you are hearing.

Pull me Under

Thanks

its not that the drums are stiff, they are faster than your guitar part throughout the intro.

sounds like you are using your general pc midi when you could run it through something like battery and have a much better result!

there are issues throughout but i don't mind cause the synth parts are fantastic!

there are only a handful of pitch problems in your vocals but the more distracting thing is the mix. try giving yourself more low end.

cheers!

I have to agree about the drums in the intro, it sounds like it's rushed. I'm sorry but I'm not familiar with the original. Is it supposed to be like that? You did a great job on programming the drums otherwise. The guitar playing is excellant and sound really nice. Did you mic the guitars or go direct? The synth was nice but i thought it stuck out too much in the mix, personally. As far as the vocals, they sound good but a little pitchy at times. Also, i couldn't hear much bass if any. Was there even a bass?

You are close on the drums. It was roland sound canvas. I have yet to find a drum sample I like. I have the kontakt sampler. I have used drum kit from hell the stuff that came with kontakt but I have not gone back to that dream theater thing. Thanks for the compliment on the synth. I agonized over those sounds. I guess I should have agonized over the rest of it more.

Bass was there but I did not have a decent direct box at the time.

Guitars are a fender tele fmt through a podxt. Vocals were a one-off through a joe meek threeq

Yeah the snare at the beginning is off. But you got the guitar tone and synth very close to theirs man. I think you swept too many mids off the vocals and it needs more reverb. I also noticed that you didn't harmonize the vocals! The drums need a bit more depth and be boomier. I can barely hear the toms and the kick. But yeah Dream Theatre is very difficult and complicated.

I think the only thing off timing wise in the opening is that accent you play on the crash (they're all early); maybe there is a snare hit hid behind the cymbal as well, can't quite tell. The rest of the drums seem synced with the guitar quite well. Just slide the cymabl hits a little later.

Otherwise sounds great; I especially like the guitars and vocals.

Thanks for all the positive feedback. I will post some more up to date stuff I have done in a couple of days.
