bird poo poo? they don't sound like shit compared to other stuff i've heard ... your vocals are a bit .. i don't know, kind of ... you know, i don't know, i just don't like the way that they sound .. it's just my taste, but there's nothing bad about your mixing c'mon
You're kidding, right?

I didn't know Samson made a compressor. I'm betting it will set the 3630 out of business for being the ultimately duff compressor.

What is muddiness? Is that a bad thing or a good thing?
Bad.

Don't despair though, you know when you're writing and the paper keeps curling up at the corners? The Samson gear is really good at dealing with that. ;)

I use mainly pretty cheap gear. When money's tight you have to buy really wisely and i'm afraid to say that Samson gear isn't usually a wise buy in my experience.

I haven't used that specific unit though.

Why the heck do people at sam ash tell me "ITS GREAT GEAR!" "AWESOME" for vocals and rap music. I'm tired of fake people doing me cold. Please tell me ya'll know what you're talking about, because if you don't, please don't act like it. Please.

You listened to a moron salesperson?

Here's a clue: if they knew jack about recording they wouldn't be *selling* stuff for a living.

Don't listen to salesmen.

You need to research stuff before you go out and spend your money. There's a lot of crap out there and the guy in Sam Ash is perfectly happy to sell it to you.

Do some research and get your ass on ebay. Here's a few which would be much better than that Samson unit:

I'm about a 6-7 inches away from the mic. Hey Sonic Albert, you seem to know what you are talking about, can I send you my original .ses (adobe audition) format, and can I see how you'd mix it so I can get a better insight. If you feel you are burdened to do this, I will pay you some money, as you can see I'm all about the music, and trying to get everything together in place.

I appreciate your time in your response.

Hey thanks, I appreciate the vote of confidence! Unfortunately, I am totally swamped right now and will be for a while. I feel lucky to be busy! I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to open an .ses file anyway, as I don't use that software.

There's a really good book on mixing you should buy. It's called "The Mixing Engineer's Handbook", by Bobby Owsinski. It's worth every penny you'll pay for it. It's not overly technical, yet helps out with technical things as well. One of the strongest aspects of the book are the interviews with excellent engineers, who share a lot of their tricks and work methods. There are interviews with guys that mix rap/hip hop, as well as other styles. I keep going back to this book over and over, as there is a wealth of information and good advice in it.

I think that getting a great book on mixing like "The Mixing Engineer's Handbook" is more important for you than buying new gear right now. Once you get the book and want to try out some of the ideas in it, at that point you'll have a better idea of what gear you need.

Because the people at Sam Ash work on a comission. That comission is probably based upon profit margin and not ticket price. This means that the more profitable items are the ones they are going to push the most.

Not everybody on this board knows what they're talking about, and even the one sthat do are not perfect, but there are many folks on this board who have the knowledge and experience you are looking for, and offer it up with no ulterior motives like profit to color their opinions. Just read the responses carefully. Does what they're saying seem logical; does it make sense? Do they explain why they're saying what they're saying or are they just parroting truisms they read elsewhere on the board? Do they say they have first-hand or otherwise authorative knowledge of a piece of gear ("I used to own a SuperWidegt..." or "I use SuperWidgets all the time for this...") or is it just hearsay (e.g. "The SuperWidget is supposed to be good", "I've heard good things about the SuperWidget...")

There's a LOT of good info to be had in these forums, trust me. But like any Internet situation involving Free Speech, there will be plenty of noise mixed in with the signal as well. Consider what you read in these posts for more than 3 seconds; shop the opinions just like you'd shop a piece of gear. You'll pick out the signal from the noise quickly enough.

Oh, and don't bother using the "Rep Power" ratings on the posts to judge the quality of response. The green/positive points mean almost nothing on this forum because they are traded and collected "under the table" like Oscar Goldman action figures, and often have little to do with the number of actual positive points they've actually earned.

Except in Glen's case - he's earned all of his :)

Well, that's a little tough because usually people think they know what they are talking about, whether they do or not. That's just human nature. So it's up to you to read enough posts from people to figure out whose advice you believe in.

As far as salespeople, you've really got to be careful of their advice. Unless you get lucky and find one who really knows what they are talking about and steers you toward what you really need as opposed to what they want to sell. The other issue is that most of them don't *really* know much more than the customers who are walking in, and in some cases they know less.

I've found one great way to find out about gear and get advice is to simply talk to other people that are doing the same thing I am. Or another helpful plan is to look at actual studios and gear lists of successful/working folks. That's how you find out better what is really being used on actual tracks, not just advertising or sales hype.

The irony is that the man who started that phenomenon was just about the least popular person here!!! And I still don't miss him.

Realestateninja -
I stand by what I said - have a look at getting a pop shield up in front of your mic because I heard a tonne of sibilance and pops that you could quite easily and very cheaply do away with.

After that, it'll be time to upgrade your AD/DA converters ... and that means it's time for a new sound card/interface!!

Keep trying, man. Don't worry, with a green dick that size, you're virtually immune to dipshittery ... or something?
