Yup. I agree with Slowjett. Sounds good to me. I never thought it was e-drums though. Maybe its just the 604's in a smaller room? When I used 604's for overheads thats what my drums sounded like too. Except my playing sucked. :)

you are getting perfectly useable sounds. i do think that the kick sounds better the second time around. then again i don't really like kicks with pillows in them at all. an Emad head is a beautiful thing.

really the biggest thing to me is that it's obvious that you are using cheap cymbals. otherwise good job

Dude, I would take it as a compliment that people think it's samples. Alot of pro records use beat detector and samples mixed in so heavily to make pro drummers sound like that.

Also, I think the drums sound great, very usable, especially for B8 crashes...I know, I've had to work with them before.

yeah the B8's do seem to sound better than expected with all the other instruments around.

thanks

Rever has helped a lot to bond your mix. Last kick sounds better but I'd like to hear more thump. Then you can boost a pinch of high to have a nice "bite".

You planning to show us the entire song? :D

haha definitely definitely ill be showing the track when its done.

struggling a bit with getting a really great guitar tone at the moment tho heh, damn billy howerdel with his amazing guitar tone..

but yeah i may also make a few tweaks to things like mic placements etc and then retrack drums

but yeah i think its the best sounding drum track ive managed to get up until now, so im quite excited. My whole goal for this project was not doing any drum replacement and it looks like i might succeed! woo

Your guitar tone sounds pretty decent. it might be lacking a little high end is all.

Try recording bass before you do guitar. Get the bass to fit in with the drums, then track guitar while making sure it's not stepping on top of anything else in the mix.

or at the very least keep in mind that to get a good recording you need to leave room for all the instruments in the mix. In my experience this means less low end and more high end than you might think.

Most guitars sound a little wimpy solo'd. Once you have the drums and bass in the mix is when they really get big sounding.

Just an update incase any one is interested

been recording some guitar and bass and stuff and thought i would share my progress! i think its sounding better than anything else ive ever recorded so far.. still a little disappointed with the snare but oh well

Sounds good. Maybe try a condenser on snare next time(just make sure you don't hit it) and you might get a better "crack".

hah can you imagine destroying a nice condenser by smacking it with a stick...

id love to try that hey but my mic cabinet is a little bit poor =[

tho i am getting that new snare in the next couple weeks, that pork pie. looking forward to retracking with that

good

Skiz, i think it sounds great. Maybe a little more bass would help.

Agreed!
I am very impressed with the sound!
You have a way better drum sound than you first post AND with the other instruments it really is a good kit!

Actually, I like the way your kit sounds so much (for harder rock stuff)
that I would love for you to tell me how you mic it (with what mics?) and what else you do to it after its recorded...

I think people thought this sounded like an e-kit because of just the kit sound... and you are a good drummer, a lot like a machine! For me, to sound like a E-kit would be a bit of a complement, in some Pro studios, they take out some kit stuff and replace it for e stuff and they sell millions!

Don't you just love the 604s? They really are fantastic! And I'm sure you can't wait to get the pork pie! Post a sample when you get it!

Thanks and Good Luck!

Hey dude...I think your sound was great...i didn't think it sounded midi at all...while the drums didn't breath like i would like them too...its a very nice sound...and if they think your triplets sound fake...that just means you are VERY consistent...which is a good thing. Good job...i think this is a very good place to work from. Cheers

hey guys, sorry havnt been on the forums in a while..

thanks for all the encouragement

finally got my hands on my new pork pie snare and retracked the drums to the track.

the track is almost finished infact and is just lacking vocals.. Ive posted the link in the MP3 mixing clinic but here's the link here incase anyone is interested

I used Audix I-5s on snare and both toms. beta52 on the kick and the 604's as overheads. also used some vocal mic for the snare bottom to pick up the snares.

still not 100% happy with the kick drum... doesnt sound powerful enough but this is the best i managed to get from it.
