By the way, could someone clear something up for me ? Does "Room mate" literally mean that the two of you share the room or does it mean you share the house/flat/apartment ?

I don't think that was the case. If it was, the Mum would surely have been described in a different way and it would be inviting cynical suspicion to not say that he shared the house with his best mate. Why bring the Mum into it ?
