I am looking to buy another mic. I was curious which of these would be recommended the most. ( As of now it seems that the AT4040 gets the best reviews )

1) AT4040
2) aT4033
3) Modded MK-319
4) Audix CX112 ( haven't heard anything about this one but have heard good things about Audix in general )

I am looking for something that can commonly be found for around $250 used on ebay.

I am mainly looking for something for male pop rock vocals. A la Edwin Mccain,
MercyMe, Dishwalla and occassionally more breathy and whispy like John Mayer. So I guess I am looking for something that has a smooth low end and not to bright. I have an AT3035 and it just seems just a tad too brittle on the top end to me. ( not sure if thats the right term or not. )

Thanks guys. I will also consider any other suggestions but please try to choose from this list first and then add any additions afterwards. Also please explain thoroughly why you chose that mic.

sorry for the double post guys. the site was acting up and I didnt think the first went through.

You can't go wrong with either of the Audio Technica's for anything.

For once, I have more than one of the choices (but just two) -- I've got two 4033's and two MK 319's, one modded by Mr. Joly, and one by me. The Joly modded MK 319 is my favorite, and I think matches your requirements best. The 4033's are very good, but the Oktavod has a smoother top end and all around better sound, I think. The 4033 is definitely better on vocals than the 3035, which I also have -- I think the 3035 is better for small clean guitar amps than it is for vocals. My other MK 319 is pretty good - I took out the inner grill and the plastic covers on the diaphram, but has a harsher high end than the 4033.

Now the disclaimer -- I don't have loads of experience with these mics (or with anything, for that matter), and have not done any dense mixes with them -- just sparse mixes that include vocals, electric/acoustic guitar, bass, and sampled drums and other instruments.

I got my 4033a for $200 from craigslist. Technically $250 if you include the Art Tube MP preamp. Which I can't seem to sell for more than $25 these days, so I guess the mic was $225.

As far as that mic, it sounds great on Tuba and Bass Trombone. Not so much on the upper brasses. Many characterize as a bright mic, but I wouldn't, at least not mine. I haven't tried vocals on it yet. The 4033 is a good room mic. Also used for acoustin guitar and drum overheads. Although I haven't used it for that myself. Given a choice I'd probably go with the 4040 or 4050.

Ultimately I'll probably go with a ribbon mic myself. Or a higher end super sensitive LDC like the sE Electronics TITAN. But I'm more interested in the detail / accurancy, than any sort of coloring, or better than thou art recording.

I guess that I should add, I am going to be using it mainly for vocals through a DMP-3. I might use it combined with other mics for mic'ing acoustic guitar as well.

I have heard very good things about the Joly modded mk-319s.

I would say that its so far a toss up between the 4040 and the Joly Mod 319.

Anyone have any sound clips of these two mics?

I heard the 319 is very good for rejecting sibilance, how about the 4040? Sibilance is the devil.

Thanks guys.
