BTW, that's a great deal on a very good machine! The MX-80 is a very straightforward, good machine and sounds perfectly good. Personally, I'm not eager to have a 24-track, but I'd be delighted to have a machine like that with a solid set of 2" 16-track heads and/or 1" 8-track heads. Enjoy!

Yeah...I foolishly passed on a similar deal last year but one that included both 16 and 24 track heads.

Anyway, I think I have a solid foundation with this machine with lots of parts to start off, and maybe I just need to add a few more spare parts (capstan motor, reel motor, maybe guides, etc)...and it will last me forever.
Of course, I will be keeping an eye out for a 16-track head block too, which would some serious icing on the cake....but I'm not going to be upset if I never find one. This 24-track is already a solid "upgrade" for my audio, though yeah, 2" 16-track would be a big bonus.

Wow, nice deal. I've seen a local Otari MTR-100A (I believe top of the line 2"/24 at the time) a few years back go for $1700. Those things were 100K originally. I always kicked myself for not buying it, just because..

That was Daniel (cjacek) that mentioned the makeup pads and it’s a great idea. When I was a lad working in a commercial studio on the big machines we used chamois strips and lent-free cloth as well as long wooden-stick Q-tips made for the task.

I never used makeup pads before, but I do now. I got mine form Walgreens drug store. The ones I got are called Perfection Textured Cotton Rounds... soft, gentile, textured and strong. I got all giggly when I was in line buying them. A girl behind me pinched me in the ass so I hit her with my purse. (Just kidding about that last part… I didn’t have a purse)

I dont know about BC, but southern california is awash in large format machines. Im enjoying my modest collection of them Ha.. deals to be had, but as soon as you have to think about getting it shipped they sure run up the price.

I've seen more pro tape decks, consoles and other vintage analog gear listed on eBay with Hemet, CA as the location than any other city in the USA.....like WTF?




Hey mdainsd...if you really are near to any audio surplus places that have a lot of these older decks and whatnot...I would love to get some contact info on any that sell parts and stuff. I can find things on eBay occasionally, but I'm sure there are some audio supply places that don't generally post on eBay or CList...and it looks like the area around Hemet, CA is ripe with vintage analog gear.
If you have any info...please post.

I havent found anything like a studio surplus place. I rely on craigs list and ebay, craigs list being the best. Get some dialog going and you will be amazed at what surfaces. Work he leads. I even check out the national sales lists. Ifs its an east coast broker with items in socal, often deals can be worked out.

Or maybe I'll just start a locator service yeah! thats the ticket!

Man, that really is a clean looking deck! Very nice, that's going to sound great and you got a LOT of good stuff out of that deal, so much tape! That 499 should be good stuff, hit it at +9 and prepare to rawk and roll Nice on the MRL too, any idea what tape it's on?
