So after too many years on my Event PS8's, I now have the budget and need for a step up pair of monitors. I learned on a set of Tannoy System 1200's many years ago, and I am a believer in coaxial technology, so naturally, I've been keeping an eye out for something along these lines. I ended up with a set of Tannoy System 8's, which is an older verson of the System series, and with 8 inch drivers. Got them through ebay from a local seller, who also threw in an old Hafler DH-200 and some Monster speaker cable for cheap.
My first impressions were YIKES! Awkward upper midrange stuff going on. Or, rather, my Events were probably lacking in that department, making them more pleasing to the ear. I also noticed that the Tannoys don't quite have the low end or punch of the Events. Quite as in, little difference.
As I listened more on the Tannoys, I found them to be more detailed. I could hear the layers of tracks a lot easier. There was more separation. And I could hear what was going on within the tracks a lot easier, such as compression. Not to mention the vastly improved phasing (or lack thereof) in the crossover point area, and increased "sweet spot" field.
So now that it's been a few weeks, the Tannoys are keepers. It took a few days, but I got used to how they sound. Whereas the Events are more "hi fi", the Tannoys are more accurate and precise. A big step up for a humble bedroom/mobile studio.
Now, what to do with the Events? Keep them for a secondary reference? Or try to offload them for some cash? I figure I could get $300 out of them at the most. I sure could use a sub...
