That's the living room. My wife hangs out in there. She doesn't want the God of Thunder staring at her while she's watching Oprah. :p

I thought Oprah WAS the God of Thunder???

Nice kit dude :p

Both bands I'm in have practice kits set up in the studios (saves me from having to haul mine all over hell-n-back)... One is a nice Premier with Zildjian A's and the other is an old Tama Rockstar with Sabian B8's... I'm thinking once you upgrade your cymbals you WILL start noticing the difference... 'specially on the hats and the ride (get a nice cutting bell) Even as a basher :D

I played Zildjians for years but now I'm primarily a Sabian guy, tho I do have some prized Zildjians still hanging out

My current spread is:

Big set

21" Sabian HHX raw bell ride (mmmmmmmm....)
18" Sabian AAX China
18" Sabian AA Medium Crash
16" Sabian AAX crash
14" Sabian AAX Studio crash
12" Sabian AA splash
14" Sabian AA Hi Hats (remote)
13" Sabian AAX/HH Fusion Hats (mmmmmmmm...)
8" Wuhan splash

Little set

20" Zildjian Custom K Dry ride (my jazz 'go-to')
18" Zildjian sizzle crash/ride (1970's)
18" Zildjian low-boy china
16" Sabian AA Sound Control crash
13" Sabian AAX Fast Hats
10" Wuhan splash

Can't wait to hear your recordings

:)

Thanks man. That's a lot of cymbals.

I went 2 days ago to pick up the gig-bags I ordered for this kit, and spent about an hour tapping and bashing on cymbals. I still don't know what I'm looking for, but I did hear quite a few that I know I don't like. Maybe I'm onto something.

Recorded some quick drum tracks today with the new kit. Freaking amazing is all I can say. Maybe I'm just excited, but it sounds better with just 4 mics than my old kit did with 7. Took A LOT less EQ too. The toms sound incredible just through the O/H's. The toms came through so big I had to moon-gel them. :p

They're not ready for posting clips though, so don't ask. :D

As for cymbals... learn a light touch. Everyone will thank you for it later, including your ears! Don't wreck your hearing while you're young, man. The trick to the John Bonham sound is that he hit the drums hard but the cymbals lightly.

Any brand makes good cymbals these days, but I buy ALL of mine used. Used cymbals are a bargain. Invest $300 or so in some older A Zildjians and you'll have a total classic sound. Nothing wrong with Sabians, either... my very best-sounding cymbal is a 21" Sabian Vintage Ride with a professionally repaired edge crack and two rivets. I got it used for $50 because "it's broken". At one point, my kit had Istanbul Agop, Paiste, Sabian, Zildjian, and Wuhan all at once! No two cymbals of the same brand, if you don't count the hi-hats.

First of all, love the extra low tom... I'm with ya on that vs. the Portnoy mini toms.

As for cymbals, one line that has stood the test of time for me is the Sabian AA line. I really love my 18 med-thin. Everything is great about it. The 18 medium is also solid. Vault is over-hyped.. i have a 19 which is a good cymbal but it splashes a little too much.. hen again on recordings, who the hell cares. Or live, you hardly hear it! For faster playing though, i'd love a 17 med'. The 19 isn't fast enough at times.

For hi hats, i have Sabian AAX hats but i really like the neil Peart line 14's.

Zildjian's just sound a litle flat to me. Or atleast at the time they did. I did like the ping ride though.. a tad more than the 21 AA rock ride that i ended up with. But again, they all record well, who the hell cares!

Just curious, have you ever tried playing with the hi-hat and crashes lower? They seem very high to me. YMMV. Looks like a fun kit, BTW. :)

Cheers,

Otto

High hi-hats, Scott Travis style! I recently brought mine back down.. was hard when sitting lower to do fast paradiddles on the hats as i kept hitting with the shaft of the stick rather than the ends so it is a trade of. Its great for power drumming i find because the right hand doesn't get in the way as much of the left on the snare but its all preference. The cymbals might be high for recording purposes.

I don't do paradiddles (I barely even know what those are) or any other fancy hat stuff, just fast 8th notes and whack the snare hard, so I need it high. Like you said, I need room for my left hand to beat the snare. I don't think the crashes are high. They're easily within reach. I'm 6'1. I got long monkey arms. :p

Thanks everyone.

P.S.- what does "YMMV" mean?

*UPDATE*

This kit was supposed to come with a free Black Panther snare. I chose the cherry-maple 13x6. Nice little snare. Like everything else with this order, that part of the deal was fucked up. They sent me some Pearl 13x11 marching-band thing. So, I called again, and got a return label sent to my email. I ship the marching band snare back, and let them know. The next day, I get another backorder notice. The Black Panther snare is on backorder. So I call again, and start ripping assholes. The guy I've been dealing with offers to swap it out with another snare of equal value. I tell him okay and I'll get back to him. I went to GC and beat on a few and decided that I really wanna try a brass snare. So I searched MF's catalog and found a Black Panther 14x5.5 premium brass. It just showed up yesterday. If it sounds as good as it looks, I'll be happy.
