I picked up a 4 track over the weekend. It has great heads and comes with a parts machine. 1/2", 15 ips and 30 ips. It looks to be in good shape.... Manual too. (hard not to grin too much.) It was a long trip up to Vancouver BC and Back.

Wow... a beautiful machine. I'd drive from Florida to Vancouver to pick that up. I used to use one of the 1/4" two track machines when I worked as remastering engineer at Pickwick Records many years ago. You're going to love it. I have to ask..... how much??? Enquiring minds want to know.

Dude that's a nice looking deck! One day I'll have one of my own. Best of luck with it. Don't forget to post some songs on the analog music forum.

The asking price was $1500 for the 2 decks, manual, a pile of empty reels, the GP9 reel and some other odds and ends.

One of the decks has 3 heads as you would expect and the other has 4 heads. DO you know why there are 4 heads? (erase, record, playback, playback) all 4 track heads.

That's nice, Ethan.
The photo sucks though .... :p
make a better one :D
**************

I've noticed that some regular analoggers of this board are getting phatter and phatter lately ;) :D

So the ASKING price was $1500? What did you pay?

And there are TWO decks?

I can't remember the reason for the additional head.

Ethan, you ought to consider joining the Ampex List. Good group and VERY knowledgeable regarding Ampex products and history. Its been a necessary analog diet supplement for me since picking up the 440-8.

So...you've got an MCI haltrack and now the ATR-104...could you use the 104 as a halftrack? wondered if the guides and such are adjustable.

Where's the pic of Mrs. evm1024 smiling next to the 104???

heeheehee

Many consider the ATR-100 series to be the best analog open reel decks ever. Congrats.

Woah. That I did not expect. "4-track" instantly conjured visions of a cassette machine or something...

Nice! That is the ultimate!

I suspect the 4th head is 2 tracks

I wish it was a 1/2" 2 track head....

Future plans are to set the other headstack up for 2 track 1/4" and then perhaps some day a 1/2" 2 track.

I would not have driven to San Francisco for the MCI (or perhaps I would) if the Ampex were available at the same time. But then it just popped up.

As for Natasha, She went both to SF and then again to Vancouver to pick these decks up. THe lure of travel is strong in her.

I'll see about a better photo.

Hey, Ethan. So you were in the neighborhood? ;) Is this the same guy who has a 2" 16 / 24 track Studer, plus parts machines? BTW, nice 4 track. Can we get a lookie at the heads?

If both play heads are the same format, the 1st is a preview head for mastering purposes.

That's the place. The Studer is huge and comes with 3 or 4 half track machines.

Thought about you on the way up. Way too late to PM. We spent less than 3 hours in Canada.

Next time.

I put up a head photo at that last link.

Yeah, would love to have those machines but no space and no money:D.

Man, those 4 track heads look new and unworn. :)
