I have this strange condition you see...
I get out of work on thursdays, and my car automatically drives over to guitar center.

All week long I insist I am not going to guitar center but I am totally powerless.

I have absolutly everything I need (and more) to make a great recording, but Its never enough.

Is there a support group or something I can join, because this is really putting a dampering on my sex life *caugh*prostitutes*cough*

I've gone seven months without buying anything but guitar strings. I really have bad gear lust at the moment for the Yamaha Motif synth and guitar effects. I will hold off on those for awhile but I am checking out guitars all the time and you never know when I might pick one up that I must have no matter the price.

Someday I'll be on my death bed and someone will ask if I had any regrets in life. I doubt I will look back and say, "I wish I hadn't bought that pair of small diaphram condensers."

Hi Demensia!

Glad you came. Just works the steps...it works if you work them

  1. We admitted we have problems with with buying gear - that our lives had become unmanageable.
  2. Came to believe that a Power Greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity....his name is bdgr
  3. Made a decision to "turn our will and our life over to the care and direction of bdgr, as well as all our gear".
  4. Made a searching and fearless inventory of our studio, mic closet, and home to send to bdgr.
  5. Admitted to bdgr, to ourselves, and to the ups driver the exact location of our gear
  6. Were ready to have bdgr remove these defects of character..er...gear
  7. Humbly asked God to remove our equipment, instruments, etc.
  8. Made a list of people we though might also need bdgrs assistance, and became willing to make thier addresses available to bdgr
  9. shipped said gear to bdgr wherever possible, except when it was something he didnt really want...then just put it on ebay and send him the money...paypal excepted.
  10. Continue to take personal inventory and when we bought new stuff, promptly ship it. (A daily step)
  11. Sought through prayer and meditation...and email to improve our conscious contact with our loving bdgr, praying only for knowledge of bdgr's will for new equipment and the power to carry fufill it. (A daily step)
  12. Having had a spiritual awakening as a result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to persons suffering with gear addiction and practice these principles in all of our affairs. (A daily step)
    [/list=1]

Just take it one day at time....Easy does it...
and keep coming back...it works if you work it...

My name is Dave, and I'm a gearaholic!

Dude, don't feel bad, 'cause you're not alone. I'm worse.

I have a music room/studio, and it's packed, wall-to-wall with gear of every sort. I have a gear closet, and it's packed, literally no more stuff can fit. Stuff that's in the studio is double- and triple-stacked, I kid you not. To top this all off, I have stuff stacked in the garage too, which actually needs to move inside, because the summer heat will destroy it,... [mental note, move the stuff from the garage inside].

I have stuff I bought and have not even put to good use yet,... all future plans,... but no time to do it. All that, and I'm still buying stuff.

Worse, [or better yet], I have a personal sales rep at Guitar center. Hey man, they treat me right at GC! Last time I was there, I bought two guitars and two hardcases. Two! Now I have 17 friggin guitars!

I'll buy older used Tascams on Ebay, especially if they're mint, or even low-priced fixers. I just bought something last night, a Tascam 234-fixer, for $50 + shipping. Did I need it? No, I already have two 234's that work fine!

I bought a 2500' reel of 2" tape, and I don't even have a 2" machine!!! Hey, it was on clearance, $50 for a $300 reel of tape! [Mental note: buy an ATR-80/24, 2" 24-track, asap, as financials permit].

Last year, I spent myself into the danger zone, all on gear, and then my wife put us way over budget, 'cause she wanted 'hers' too. [note: revenge spending]. If it were not for a loan from my dad, I'd be bankrupt and on the street,... with my family and my gear. [mental note: never again,... never again].

Dude, you may be a gearaholic, but I'm worse.

My name is Dave, and I'm a gearaholic.

Monty,... it's your turn!;)

Ha ha! This takes the cake for sure. I may be tempted to buy something like that, but the fact that I'll probably never ever use 2" tape would win out in the end. What were you thinking?

Hey, maybe you can eBay it and make some money.

Yeah, no doubt, that takes the cake!

What was I thinking? Only the obvious,...

either I'd get a 2" machine, or I'd not get the 2" machine and Ebay the 2" reel out. Believe me, I'd like to have a 2" 24-track, and except for being pricey and having no room for it, I don't see anything wrong with that. Anyway, only time will tell.;)

Dave...how much will you give me for a Tascam 38 and the outboard DBX 150 units to go with it?? works fine.

Sorry, I'm full-up on Tascam 38's,...

I already have three:

-one is my original unit I bought in 1983, that's still mint,...

-the second was a real deal until UPS dropped it several times and broke it, now it's a fixer,...

-and the third was a deal I could not resist [$299] that needs only a calibration, but otherwise is mint.

;)

And dbx?...

I already have four DX-4D units, and probably another one lying around here somewhere.;)

BTW,...

I think your Tascam 38/dbx 150 system is worth about $450, or $500+ on a good day.;)

Guys, you talk about curing the decease, but how con one prevent it??????'' Actually I am beginning to think that I might catch a bad strain of it, I'm suscribed to Mix, Electronic Musician, Recording mag and lately I see gear everywhere, when I 'm driving, at work, during my sleep, i only think about this piece of hardware that I want, that software, this mike, that processor....it is starting to haunt me.....am I in trouble???? please help!!!!!!!!1:eek:

I'm obviously the wrong person to ask,...

but I hear freezing your credit cards in blocks of ice helps with impulse credit card shopping. By the time you can thaw them out, hopefully the impulse is gone. Don't carry large amounts of cash, and put the rest of your cash reserves into 10 year CDs. That'll lock it up tight.

Don't subscribe to Paypal, it makes it way too easy to spend yourself into oblivion, and unsubscribe from all the recording rags, and avoid the temptation.

=========

Hey, I'm no better, I think about music and gear all the time.

I watch MTV/VH1 music videos and music related movies to check out the gear! I may not even be into the songs, but it's like, "hey, he has an Ibanez bass,... ooh, that's a nice custom PRS,... hey, there's a Danelectro,... yep, he's playing an Ibanez guitar,... wow, look at that reel-to-reel,... ooh, there's an expensive condenser mic,... hey, all those guys are playing Takamines!"

I kid you not.;)

yep, having credit cards and Paypal accounts doesn't help!!!!!!1this week I bought a hardly used 1604 VLZ ackie mIxer for $700 and new Delta 1010 soundcard for $525, so that's $1225 just this week, damn!!! I gotta get a better payed job quickly!!!!!!!!:D

Ahh, another one stands up to be counted.

This is a real frickin' sickness. As bad as drinking or smoking.

You can treat the symptoms, but there is no cure.

A 2" reel of tape? Don't feel bad. I thought about that too a long time ago. I thought it would give me an excuse to buy an ATR.

Then I thought, "are you nuts?" So I started thinking about a 1" reel.

I've spent a lot of money (for me) on gear this last month, but it was buying things that really filled a need. I don't understand the mindset of buying things that you have no use for.

If I were you guys, I would sit down and make of an inventory of all the gear you own, and rate it in terms of usefulness. Then I would sell every piece of gear that is not being used.

The only way I would keep a piece of gear that is not being used, is if I had definite plans for using it in the future, AND it is a rare piece and would be difficult to find in the future when I needed it.

Dave,

It sounds like you have a lot of money tied up in gear. I may be wrong here, but it also seems you have gear that is not being helped by being shelved. I know tape machines are not particularly helped by sitting around and not being used. When they've set for a long period of time, they sometimes have problems when you crank them up. If you sold all those stacks and stacks of gear, you might have the money, and the room, to buy that 2" machine you would like to have. Nevertheless, you could reward yourself with some purchases that you could find useful in your recording chain. Heck, sell those three Tascaam D-38's at the price you were saying they would sell for, and your $1,000 away from a Neumann M-149 :)

Another point, some gear holds it's value, other gear becomes boat anchors. It would be advantagous to sell anything that is depreciating because of technological advancement.

There's something else that works for me, more out of necessity than anything else, because I don't have that much money. But, it might work for you guys too. If you have some funds available, decide how much of it you will spend on gear, and stick to it.

I was once a very impulsive buyer too, exercising little self-control when it came to these kinds of things. Simplifying my life, and in the process, heavily restricting my cash flow coming in, has forced me to change some of these habits.

Having a set budget for gear expenditures will help you in two ways. It will help you to spend your money wiser, and it will satisfy (at least it does for me) that lust you have for gear.

When you have an allocation of money that you are spending on gear, and you know this will be it for a while, you really want to make those dollars go far for you. That really helps to avoid the impulse buying. You see something you really want, but you're thinking in the back of your mind: "If I buy this right now, what will it prevent me from being able to buy tomorrow." Having that limit, really makes you put a lot of thought into your purchases, and really helps you to get the most bang for your buck. Tube Dude said something in another thread that really struck me, and I thing it will be motto for buying gear from now on. He said: "think smart". It's a pretty simple precept, but it says a lot.

I also have this driving preoccupation in my brain that you guys speak of. When I'm driving in the car, when I'm at work, no matter what I'm doing, I'm thinking about gear. For some reason, knowing that I have this money to spend, makes me very contented. Because I know I will be able to satisfy these cravings that I have. I know I won't be able to buy everything I want, but I will be able to buy some things that will satisfy that thirst a little bit.

Even that in itself helps me to exercise patience when it comes to purchasing. I know once I spend the wad, it's gone. So that contributes to my mulling over these purchasing decisions and getting the best deals.

Delaying your purchasing is also good in another way. When a whale of deal comes along, you have the money to jump on it. And, they do come along. I've made some of my best purchases because I was at the right place at the right time, and I had the jack on my hip. I read RAP religiously. Some incredible deals come through there. I bought a pair of NS-10M's that are in absolute mint condition for $200. In my latest cash allotment, I knew I wanted to go ribbon. I just happened to be the first to reply to a message from a seller this past month on RAP, and I picked up two Beyer M-260 ribbons for $400, that had just been modded by Steven Sank.

Another example of how delaying and ruminating over a decision has helped me. My decision was to buy a couple of good preamps. I wanted one that was clean, and one that was colored, and I wanted both of them to have enough gain to accomodate ribbons. After doing much research and talking with some knowledgable folks, I had decided on going with the Great River MP-2, and a Peavey VMP-2. I was later reading one of the mic pre threads, and Harvey said if he could buy two pres now it would be the MP-2 and the VMP-2. That made me feel pretty good about my conclusions. Purchase was still delaying though, as I was contemplating the best price I could get them for.

In the process, another possibility came up, the Sytek MPX-4Aii, I think it compares favorably with the Great River, and you can buy them straight from Sytek on eBay right now for 53% off of retail. That saved me a bundle I can now spend on other things. :)

I know everyone's situation is different, and this might not work for you at all. YMMV. But this really seems to work well for me. It satisfies that gear lust, to an extent, and helps me get the most out of my purchases.

In fact, the mixer and the souncard are for my soon to be home studio, I really need them both. But then I still need monitors, recording sortware, plugins, cables, mics..............

Man, I can tell'ya stories,...

but trust me, the worst of it's over. I'm under control now, even though by my explanation it doesn't seem so. The worst of my spending is definitely over, and now I'm just picking up little things, here & there, and yes, it's stuff that I need, but it's just time that doesn't allow me to indulge myself in recording. I have a family, a household to maintain, and a full time job,... plus a lot of correspondences and interests on the web, like HRcom.

All of this stuff is stuff I have future plans for,... but I get precious little done every day. That's life, isn't it?

Part of my reasoning was to get pieces of known good recording gear at below market prices, do a tune up and refurbishment, and sell them at a profit. Another idea rolling around in my head, was to amass a lot of gear, then open a recording specialty shop. A third idea, was to have enough recording gear that I might give a few pieces to my friends, or even rent it out to the local musicians. Beyond that, I've considered granting gear to the local community college music department. All those ideas, but so far, it's only been stacking up at home. Sure, I'll probably sell some of it eventually.

Beyond being a musician and recording hobbyist, I'm also a tech, and I consider low-priced fixers an investment, believe it or not.

Sure, last time I was at GC, I did indeed buy 2 guitars and 2 hardcases, but they were low-priced guitars, with one for me and one for my young son, as a future birthday gift.

Hey, I may have some 'outside' ideas, but I'm not crazy, and trust me, the worst of my impulsive spending is over. No one can go on like that forever, and I learned my lesson last year.

I'll work it all out, and put it all to good use eventually, but thanx for the advice. I don't disagree with you, at all.
;)

Reel, if you ever need to get rid of stuff maybe I could buy some of it...or if you need to get rid of it right away I'll be glad to take it away for you:D
