my monitor is killing me!

Howdy, all. Everytime I track a guitar or bass I end up with a ton of hiss from my monitor -- any suggestions on how to avoid this (other than turning it off and flying blind).

I try to turn/move away from it as much as possible and can occasionally find a 'sweet spot' where it's less than normal, but it's still bleeds into the track. Any suggestions would are appreciated. Thanks!

A flat panel monitor will cause much less hum, although it will not be gone totally. Of course thats an expensive option...
 
Turn the thing off when you track!

Then turn it on when you finish.

Learn the keyboard shortcut to stop recording and you are set.
 
Another suggestion is to move as far away as possible from it.. sometime I sit across the other side of the room... other times I turn the monitor off... because I have 2 monitors I find that each send out different signals in the air... I don't know why, but one day it's my 19" monitor that causes the problem.. the other day it's my 15".

I had the same problem which disappered when I got a new guitar with humbuckers instead of single coils
 
actually, sometimes you can stay like 2 feet (sitting distance) from the monitor. and merely turn your body between 90 and 120 degree's sitting and it will ALL go away.

Sometimes that doesn't work. So, I get away from the monitor like to the center of my room.

I myself know the keyboard shortcuts. But some songs it's nice to have the screen up with all the waves showing.
 
Yeah, I can cut a lot of the noise by turning, but it's still there and fairly obvious.

I was under the impression that it wasn't good to be turning your monitor (or TV or whatever) on and off a dozen times in an hour? (yes, I do a lot of takes) ;)

I may try and rearrage things a bit and hope to upgrade to a flat screen someday. I was just hoping some music-minded company figured out some way to block those nasty rays and I just hadn't heard about it yet... Thanks for the help.

An LCD will eliminate that noise. I'm with you mary man, I NEED an LCD NOW! I can use all the hot keys but once in a while I get a great take that was actually just playback and I freak out.

Plus it gets really annoying having to turn it off all the time. I nearly wore the on off switch on my monitor.
 
You are corect, it's not good on your monitor to keep turning it on and off. I have to do this and I'm just waiting for my monitor to blow. As stated before, a good flat panel screen will take the noise away for the most part as they do not have a huge yoke at the back of a tube to re-direct flying electrons. Those are a bit noisy...
